Black Mambo TDi75

Mot day (with turbo sounding duff) and its passed, just fuel filter heat shield touching rear axle beam brake flexi was all they could find!! Result.

However! The dilemma of a turbo still looms over me. It drives okay, just when boosting occurs you get the scream of a dieing turbo wobbling into oblivion. Then the owl hoot as the engine get switched off or pulls away.

Hmmmmm

New recon turbo has been found so this is good news, no one wants a turbo to fail on a new engine install!! THis car/project has tested my resolve and love for the marque for sure. It rewarded me at the pump with 510 miles on 37 litres of diesel, not bad given 2/3 of that were with the overheating over pressurised knackered engine. Step in right direction.

Are you sure it's not a boost leak? Any black smoke at all? Has inlet manifold been off at all?

I reckon that the time has come for you you to be in touch with them at B&F Autos West Hounslow. Don't charge stupid and really do know their stuff when it comes to A2's. Not a million miles from "Brizzle" either, just up the M4 this side of Heathrow. Gary to ask for, or John. Don't charge stupid money either.

Hi Howey, inlet manifold was off I took it off to clean it out and refitted it myself on the driveway, why do you ask?
Is the gasket one time use?
What noises would it make?

I think i will have a go at the turbo change myself first before I spend more money. I have the space the tools and hopefully the luck for getting it out!

New turbo or reman arrived today, impressed with packaging and quality, came with strong warning and instructions about bleeding oil through before letting engine drive the shafts.

Play in the shaft on the new one is very small, smaller than I remember the current one I wiggled, and the one that came off the duff engine so that bodes well. I guess it's a fraction of mm and the blades go working around in the shell, eventually sanding themselves and also not boosting properly

Just thinking of ideas as to what's causing the noise, if the manifold was leaking or not, then it might cause a similar noise

Yes good point, I did make sure I torqued it all up correctly and checked the gasket, seemed ok. If I have to take the inlet off again I'll get a new gasket for sure. Unsure if I have to yet as amf unit unbolt from the exhaust manifold rather than the maniturbo of a bhc and atl. Who knows. I won't be trying for a few weeks though yet.

On the 1.9 tdi pd I have reused the inlet manifold gasket on 4 occasions without issue same for EGR gaskets. If you could splice in a tyre valve into a intake hose then apply air pressure that could find a intake leak

Had the please and fortune of my friend checking my car for free with the laptop and full vcds. The turbo boosts about 1\3 of its expected boost under throttle and doesn't spool up at 1500 rpm at all. This explains the sound of air bypassing itand also some excess oil blowing with it passed the flinger end plates that i viouslt won't be be spinning anyway near fast enough.

More news on the webasto, sadly, not good. The circuit board I had repaired for free is now fine. However I have the following codes in the photo.

We ran a test and the dosing pump and exhaust fan worked okay.

Surely this is good news, as you have the turbo there and looks like replacing it will solve the issue.

Yes good news as it confirms its the turbo and I havent wasted cash buying a shelf spare turbo. Nervous and not looking forward to committing to remove the old one though as so much can go wrong! Not far to local ramps though :)

First though is to repair the spare car, T5 van needs a tandem pump and fuel filter. (my third tandem this year) Good grief :p

So today was a joyous day! A trip to south wales to collect the car from Aberdares finest garage. New turbo and a side gearbox mount fitted! The car now sounds drives adn feels llike it should, and I must add I havent felt it drive like this since I bought it. IT is a bit of triggers broom car now but its well an truly rescued :)

A few weeks back in the heat I limped it terrified to Timmus and had the drivers door lock replaced (was one of the worst hed seen and binned it!), spare key circuit board re soldered, driver footrest trim removed (game changer), cruise control fitted and my broken wired handfree bluemusic repaired. Oh and mini-DIS activated along with a lock beep.

While I was there I had hard touch window switches installed which Id had waiting for ages.

So heres the stuff I have to go at my leisure now.....

Repsray the original bonnet. (2nd hand one will be fitted while I do this in evenings)
Heated Mirrors to clip in place
Working ashtray to fit
Un marked glove box to fit
THen I think Ill treat it to a new wiper arm.

When the tyres wear out on this set Ill put the pepperpots on with 185/60/15 tyres.

For now though the 2.5 T5 Caravelle can retire and, its back to work for MAMBO, 70 miles a day on cruise or on a country lane to work and back.....happy days MPG is here again.
