Change to the Marketplace

We reach the point of conflicting opinions.

Let me say how I would like it to work.

1. Any new post in the discussions part does not appear in Latest Activity/What's New.

I do not want to be notified of posts 'Can you post to Timbuktu?', 'What trim colour is the part?' Etc etc for an advert in which I have no interest. Anybody interested in buying from the advert would normally read the discussion, maybe to see minor information specific to a previous question or indeed ask a question themselves.

2. Only the author of the advert can add posts to the advert part (as long as this is not abused) and these will appear in Latest Activity/What's New.

These may be posts containing supplementary information, eg new photos, a price reduction announcement AND new adverts.

That would suit, but I don't think that's how it is working at the moment... as if I edit my post it doesn't work its way back up the chain. If I could "Reply" in my own post that would work as it would then bump it back up the list, but at the moment once the initial post is done it stops appearing then.

Some agreement.

I have nothing to sell so not had the oppurtunity to see the sellers side of things. Are you saying there is no standard new post box at the foot of the advert thread?

A very logical approach Andrew and one that could be the best of both worlds. As you say though, as long as it's not abused.

Correct, if we need to add any items to the post you have to "Edit" the original post, which is going to get ungainly...

Steve, this is not a criticism, more an observation. When I hit the ‘new posts’ tab I still see the latest ‘discussions’ from the advert threads. You mention above that one reason for the change was to tidy up and get away from the classifieds clogging up the forum, but I still see them every time I visit the ‘new posts’ section. This is fine for me as I like seeing the parts advertised, I just don’t see how this latest change has actually altered anything in this respect.
I do see the point in keeping the adverts themselves clean and tidy, and that is a good thing.

As I say, this is not criticism as I appreciate all the time you guys take making this a great forum.
It certainly wasn’t taken as criticism. I agree and I think that Ben may have resolved that because it certainly was one of the things that we wanted to stop.
Thank you fir your input, please keep it up.

How would it become ungainly. You deceive the content and the layout of the advert. So you can ensure that it doesn’t look ungainly. Nothing that we have done affects your ability to update your own advert and add, remove, tidy it as you see fit.

We seem to have some people saying that seeing “new posts” for discussions and adverts is annoying and we seem to have others that want to see “new post “ messages fir parts so which half of our members should we listen to?
To me if you want to buy parts you look through the, now short and tidy adverts. It is not like the current process where you would have to read 6 pages or more to see what is being sold (due to the replies). So browsing means that the adverts are more visible and we don’t need to have the “new post” messages appearing. The new posts messages were needed in the old version because the adverts were so cluttered that people wanting parts would not be able to read through the adverts. They can now.

We cannot favour the sellers over the buyers or vice versa. Sellers will want different things to buyers so please don’t mistake this as us doing this to harm either group of people. It is a compromise that once it is up and running and people have given it a chance! Might find it is not as bad as they feared and could actually work. This is not a club that was set up to sell parts, it is a car club that can hopefully help people keep their A2s on the road. This club needs to work for the A2owners and fans first. I believe that we are doing that. Making the adverts easier to read and cleaner helps our members to find the parts they need. It will not make it harder to sell parts and it might make it easier to buy parts. I cannot see anything wrong in that.

Please give it a chance before complaining about what you think might happen. This is a friendly and helpful forum, the arguments about something that isn’t yet fully finished and hasn’t even been given a chance to see how it will work out in the long run are not helping

At least we are TRYING to improve things.

I think it depends on your personal situation. I for one joined the club as I have a project car for my son, I want to see the latest parts for sale so I don’t miss anything. However, others may not want to see these posts. I don’t think we would have a running A2 without the likes of A2Steves posts coming to the forefront of the forum.
But, what suits me may not be the general consensus and I understand that.

i have noticed that a byproduct of the new Selling forum is that the two other forums in Marketplace(Wanted&Spotted) are not appearing in Whats New, a pity.

Logically Wanted adverts should have a discussion part, but let's not changing now - Ben has enough to do.

But it is a pity to miss the Spotted posts.

Andy

So now we seem to have made the whole situation worse by clogging up the new posts section with classifieds. Just saying!

Certainly I would hope the "Spotted" one would keep cropping up, as this is an integral part of the rescue process ...

Wanted and Spotted will still appear in What’s New. It’s based on date though, so multiple ads will push old Wsnted/Spotted threads off the bottom.

Seems your own posts don't register when clicking New Posts, either.
Is that the case? There is a filter on the top right of New Posts that allows you to customise (and save) filter preferences.

Hi Ben,

Are you sure, I have not seen a Wanted or Spotted post for days.

I have just posted a test post in Spotted and it has not appeared in my What's New. Can anybody else see it in What's New?

Is it some setting/filter I have inadvertently set?

Andy

We have to consider that many members do not want to see parts fuscussions and parts “new posts” because their car needs no parts. Hopefully the majority of our members cars are running well. So when they logon to “chat about A2s” or look for help they don’t want to see that most of the new posts are about parts.

I have said this before and sorry for repeating it but it is important.

If someone is looking for parts they will browse through the fir sake adverts regardless of age etc. The fact that the adverts are no longer cluttered means that it will be easier fir buyers to search through the adverts or run a search on that section. Making your advert appear at the top or announcing it in the new posts is not essential. Someone looking for parts will search the adverts.

So please at least see how it works and give it a chance.

If new adverts or amendments to adverts are treated as “new posts” then we run the real risk of sellers either bumping their adverts to the top or posting individual adverts for every part and so clogging up the “new posts” again.

These changes will stop that and so the market place can exist for people to browse through when they are looking for a part.

Showing “new posts” to everyone whether they are looking or not is not popular with the majority of members and we have to consider the majority.

Please give it a chance, don’t claim it is not going to work before it is even fully live.
