Double DIN conversion

Far better solution the 2Din route
Either achieved by modifying the single din dash to take the cage from a 2Din or fitting a complete 2Din dash

I have checked on the web what could be the best 2din solution for me.
I have found this Sony LINK that is a double din screen but the back space requested looks to be like one din.
It seems I can insert the upper part into the one din space and just move down climate to the lower position.
I might have to cut the plastic that support the storage but generally seems to be a minor job compared to the conversion that needs to insert and lock the 2 din cage.
If you think it is a good idea the next step would be to go in a shop and check exact measure of the part that should be inserted into the 1din space and also check the screen size to be sure that it can stay into the space available.
Thanks for your comment !!

Good Evening,

No harm in going to a shop for a test fit, try it.

I would be more interested in checking locking mechanism and checking full functionality.

Just purchased a 2001 Tdi with 64,000 miles.

The original ICE has been swapped out for a Sony unit that lacks functionality with my iPhone 5. I should like to replace this with something fully compatible, allowing hands-free telephony, control of the phone and giving better sound (perhaps after upgrading speakers)

Focusing on the head unit, I wondered if anyone has successfully installed a double-DIN unit in a single-DIN dashboard? On the surface of it there should be enough overall room if the climate-control unit could be relocated into the storage space below it.

Thanks in advance

Colin

That’s basically the set up of of a double din, unless I’m misunderstand what you mean. At the very least you’ll need a double din cage and the bravery to attack your dash.

HELLO RASA2 I CONNECTED TODAY AND I REMOVED THE MUTE WIRE NOW IT WORK BUT I HAVE OTHERS PROBLEM NOW , THE FRONT SPEAKERS NOT WORKING ALSO WHEN I TURN ON THE LIGHT IT DOES NOT ELLUMINATE, SEND ME YOUR ACCOINT NUMBER SO I CAN SEND YOU SOME MONEY FOR HELPING ME HOW TO REMOVE TELEFONE,

BUT I HAVE OTHERS PROBLEM NOW
You are going to be chasing one problem after another. As I explained elsewhere, you are trying to install a Gen1 stereo onto a car with Gen2 wiring. These wiring standards are not wholly cross-compatible.
The stereo will not illuminate when you switch on your lights. The stereo will not switch off when you remove the keys from the ignition, meaning it could drain the battery.
In order to solve these problems, additional wiring looms will have to fabricated and installed in the car. If you want the double-DIN stereo to work as intended, there is no avoiding this.

Perhaps you should use a Symphony II stereo (the Gen2 version of the Symphony that you are currently trying to use). This has a radio, cassette player and 6-disc CD player, but is directly compatible with the wiring in your A2.

Cheers,

Tom

Yes, but you will still not have working speakers...

ALSO THE FRONT SPEAKERS NOT WORNKING
This is another incompatibility between the stereo and your car. It can also be solved, but will only reveal the next problem.

I cannot put this more plainly: the stereo you are trying to install is not compatible with your car.

You have two options:
1) Convert the wiring in your car from Gen2 to Gen1. This will require the fabrication and installation of additional wiring looms. Soldering and terminal extraction will be required. If you are not comfortable doing this yourself, I am happy to do it for you.
2) Install a Gen2 Symphony stereo instead of the Gen1 Symphony stereo. A Gen2 stereo will be plug-n-play with your car's existing Gen2 wiring.

All the best,

Tom

If you follow this link, you’ll get an overview of what I do within the A2 community…

I am usually based near Lancaster, but am currently working on A2s from Leighton Buzzard…
