Front wheel bearing type noise woes - Edit: RESOLVED!!!!!

Personally I think it is difficult to assess the front bearing health by listening to them with a lifted car without also removing the driveshaft, since those and the gearbox tend to add sounds.
But another reflection to your post: if you can feel a clear play in the bearing it is damaged. Any torqueing of the driveshaft nut cant affect a bearing play other than as "placebo".

Yup. My thoughts too. (More) Parts are on order.....

At this rate it will have complete new suspension, including both control arms, and knowing my luck, consoles too!!!
Just got to sort out my P1292/F265 error too....

At least its black, half leather, has good paint, and has new 17" tyres 😁

The last line made me smile!!!!

Yup. I have to agree. Does look good when detailed well. Sneaking in is my 800 in the background

Just need to sort this noise/vibration out....

Ok. So I have ben thinking.
I am going to do the NS Wheel bearing hub.
If I were to get the inner CV joints too, would These ones be a good choice?
I ask as I can sometimes hear a rumbling noise in the middle of the car. I am praying it isn't diff bearings.
That would mean a gearbox out/swap job. I have just done that on my 827 Manual Coupe.
And, I bet its:
A: harder on A2, and
B, a replacement box is harder to find!!!

Wow. After much faf, it turned out that it was the NSF wheel bearing. I found out a short while ago. Finally fitted a new front hub. What a difference!!!!

Hi Phil

Glad you got to the bottom of it, peace and quiet at last

J

Glad it's sorted, but do you still have play in your drivers side? Only ever known new bearings to torque up but have play in them when they have been inferior quality.
Jacking the car under the suspension arm will not allow you to assess the condition of the ball joint in fact it will make it impossible and potentially cause damage as I am not aware the suspension arms are listed as a jacking point.

am just about to have to do one of mine. i paid someone at the las MOT to fix it; but they just packed it with greese and conned me. so i have bought a knuckle and bearing.

Can I just confirm what the wheel bearing nut torque should be - i know someone mentioned a value here ; but where did that come from, do others concur /

cheers

The torque is 120Nm for the front hub.

thanks for the confirmation. job done. Problem is that I am now getting an abs error. i think it is because yesterday when i started the job; i discontented the battery so as to disconnect the abs sensor; then knowing that i was going to lock the car over night between finishing the job - i reconnected the battery without the abs sensor. today when i finished the job- i disconnected the battery; reconnected the abs sensor and then reconnected the battery.

does that should like it would trigger an error. how do i get rid of this error/

No I wouldn't imagine that would trigger an abs fault

Exactly, as the car didn't move, it shouldn't show error. More likely you broke it during the bearing change. It happened to me on my T5. Get diag and take a look on the ABS signals. One will be faulty on the wheel you changed the bearing 😉

If you run the car on stands, with just the fronts turning it will trigger an error.
Also, the sensor may not be fully plugged in. Happened on mine :)

cheers all, right then ; when the rain stops tomorrow - ill whip the wheel off, unplug the lead and check that i havent bent the pins when i plugged it back in . cheers

I took some readings

I didnt expect a mass air flow issue (what ever that is) - should I be worried ?

MAF is intermittent, don't worry unless your car starts dropping to limp mode.

Regarding the ABS fault it seems like your senzor was not connected properly or got damaged.

"Regarding the ABS fault it seems like your sensor was not connected properly or got damaged."

Thank you. its been too rainy to poke my head out around the car - so only quickly grabbed this data when it stopped. I've a suspicion that I may have bent the legs on it when I connected it back up - the connector in-ards looked very flimsy

I’m happy to see that I haven’t damaged anything further up the wire (static at the computer)

As you can see I used an old usb serial and VCDS lite. I did buy a new reader off ebay today but it failed to read anything. Kingbolen ya101 - seemed to not do anything except read the voltage. Has anyone had any issue with theses readers ?
