Handbrake problem after swapping brake shoes

Job done, all working as it should now. Fingers crossed the mot doesn't bring up any nasty surprises and many thanks Audifan you're a life saver.

Here is a picture, not sure what car but it is VAG, showing the handbrake arm for nearside rear brake assembly. Note the hub has been removed in this picture

Also check where the cable enters the back plate that it is located properly and along the trailing arm.

The routing of the handbrake is surely incorrect? In this position it will rub against the hub. It should retained by a bracket on the backplate.

There is no bracket on the back plate. The cable clears the hub.

This is a right rear back plate. The hand brake cable enters through the hole just to the right of the stub shaft.

Yet another difference between 1.2 & 1.4Tdi's!

Yes in many ways the 1.2 is a better design, the 1.4 using more common VAG parts. Not always better.

My brake woes continue, my better half was driving the car home the other day when the glow plug light started flashing so I plugged in the Vagcom which came up with faulty brake light switch, implausible signal and sure enough the brake lights weren't working. I ordered a new switch (black 2pin type) then went out this morning to fit it but it's still coming up with the same fault. I swapped both bulbs for brand new ones and checked the fuse but nothing seems to make any difference. As soon as you try to clear the fault it comes straight back on again.

Has anyone had this problem before and able to point me in right direction or is this something I'll need to get an Auto spark to have a look?

Thanks,
Iain

Have you checked to see if the brake lights are now working? It could be that the switch plunger needs adjusting to get the mechanism in the right place to operate correctly.

No nothings working, it's as if the problem wasn't the brake switch at all. I'm thinking it could be a bad connection or broken wire somewhere in the loom but thought I'd ask the question incase there's common cause/place this can happen before I break out the multimeter and needlessly start pulling things apart.

DRIVE THE CAR FOR A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND USE THE BRAKES AS NORMAL. TURN OFF THE IGNITION THEN RESTART. It is to do with the ABS.

Had this a couple of times. The ABS gets confused due to the lack of signal from the brake switch. The replacement brake switch should function as normally i.e. pedal pressed all 3 brake lights on, pedal released all 3 brake lights off. The issue is the ABS pump performs 2 tasks and currently can not tell which mode it should be in. It either works in braking mode when the pedal is pressed, but if the pedal isn't pressed it swaps to traction control or ASR mode. The car needs to move so the ABS sensors and the brake light switch can reset it. Worked for me every time. Unless you are "lucky" and there is a different fault. Have you set up the switch ( most now auto adjust ) but if it came with installation instructions did you follow them.
