MOT fail with missing heat shield etc etc.....etc!

I think that the problem is less of shaping the embossed aluminium, more of identifying a successful way to fasten it in place. The original mountings have almost certainly corroded away, and may well need to be resited.

Thanks Keith. Have the youtube video now to give me the gist of it but still prefer to just get the pukka article if possible. We'll see how that pans out....

Just an idea, you could approach breakers on ebay, search 'audi a2 1.4 breaking', but be warned bullzbitz is expensive.

I’ve always gone in at 50 % with Bullsbitz with good results.

Mountings are easily fixed with a permanent repair.

there appears to be a bit of a clue about which 0Mx code refers to which fuel tank option in the exhaust components pages - particularly the ANY exhaust page :

so we know that 0M2 and 0M3 refer to either 34L or 21L alternate versions in the ANY.

On AUA / BBY page (cars with 34 or 42L tanks)

there are 0M2 and 0M1 options. Knowing that, AUA should be 34L, and BBY probably 42L - (and similar process of elimination on the AMF / BHC page) as well as the image of the A-suffix part from a 2001 AMF uploaded by @kp 115 earlier -

this suggests that 0M3 is the 21L tank (heat shield 8Z0 804 172), 0M2 is 34L (8Z0 804 172 A), and 0M1 is 42L 8Z0 804 172 B).
Sorry I meant to reply yesterday. An excellent piece of detective and I get to keep my pound, but I am struggling to accept that Audi allocated the tank codes in reverse order with the codes chronologically the wrong way round with respect to tank sizes.

Andy

This site clearly shows the part numbers against the option codes and confirms the detail in Robin's post.

Hi stufree ,
If it’s any help I took my

TPS it is £31.47 + vat but is no longer available from them or Audi in UK.
Hope that helps
Keith

Make a card template of the area you need to cover marking fixing location points etc,
Lay it over a sheet of embossed alloy lagging specialists use this all the time!!!!
Cheers
Keith
Hi Keith, Roughly how big a sheet do you think I'd need? See 2 sizes on ebay, 500x300mm and 500x500mm. Do you reckon the smaller one is big enough at a guess?

Hi stufree,
All I can do is measure the width & length of mine that the fixing points had failed on but it’s off a diesel so may be different
840mm x 410mm that’s as accurate as I can measure it today that’s tape bent to follow the contour of the tunnel shape.

But mine is one piece so there may be other sections on either end!
Hope that helps.
Keith

Thanks again Keith, looks like those sheet sizes I mentioned would likely be too small then. Back to the breakers I think.

BTW You really shouldn't have gone to the bother of getting under the car but do appreciate all the help I'm getting here from like-minded A2 fans!

It’s alright I took it off last weekend as it had been rattling for around a week , fixings & corner tabs corroded off

Bullzbitz breakers tell me that, despite having the right shields, they leave them on the shell to be scrapped as too "fragile" to post! Talk about waste. The guy seemed helpful but not so much that he'd sell me one. Tried numerous other breaketrs and still nada. A few of the big breakers I spoke to haven't had an A2 for at least 2 years.
Maybe everybody should check theirs cos if yours falls off, you too will have a real problem?
Been under the car to measure up and the size you quoted Keith seems about right - it is the same part number after all ..172A so now to find an Al sheet of that type big enough to cope. Not that many selling the stuff either.

Thanks for that. Need 840 x 410 minimum apparently so this is too small. Could contact them re bigger size but I'm not the greatest with tools so the easier Al would be better for me..... and I suppose the original shields have lasted over 20 years so that would definitely see me out anyway!
Just found one supplier now for 1000 x 500mm ally that looks like the best option.

Hi stufree,
Is it the long one you need , may have some sheet from a section of pipe work that I’ve saved, already rolled tubular!
Let me know.
Cheers
Keith.
