MOT fail with missing heat shield etc etc.....etc!

Hi Keith, It's the centre bit that goes right past the petrol tank and, if it's the embossed alloy you have, then that would be great. How much would you want and how would I get my hands on it please? Can you post? Thanks a lot. Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Yes it’s embossed,
Where are you based?
Only postage/packing costs
Hope that helps
Keith

That's really great of you, thanks very much.
We're in Edinburgh, EH8 7JW.
If not too much hassle, let me know what's what and we'll take it from there.
I don't suppose you still have your shield off the car, part # ....172A, but, if so, might be easy to see if your piece of Al would be big enough? If not then I'll just order the 1000mm one. Thanks whatever.

Let's be realistic. You need sufficient embossed alloy to shield the fuel tank in order to get your MOT. How big is your fuel tank? I very much doubt you need to make an exact replica of the original.

You've had a very generous offer from Keith and if I were you I'd be taking him up on that offer.

Hi Keith, Any advance on the post and packing front (assuming you haven't changed your mind)? I need to get a working motor before the better half divorces me.

Hi Keith,
Came yesterday but been hectic here.
Thanks very much again, it's really appreciated.
I'll try making up a template tomorrow and see how it goes. I'll let you know of course.
And Weetank2 was spot on re the bulb btw - it was in the wrong way round. I've since fired the wife as lamp checker!

If you need to make the fixing location stand off’s use a short section of sink/ basin waste pipe & place a golf over it & tap with rubber mallet existing are 12.5-20 mm high will then stand off fuel lines etc

Hi stufree,
How did you get on with the heat shield fabrication?
Cheers
Keith.

Hi Keith,
I'm really sorry for not getting back to you before this, kept meaning to and been sidetracked so often.
Basically no further forward. The Al you sent was too short to do the job but thought I'd found a place in Germany (Audi Heritage or Tradition?) that had a used ...172B version.
I thought I could use that as a base and tailor it with your Al sheet to do the job but they said they'd need an EORI code after Brexit and, while we discussed how I got one of those, it was sold.
I then found GTV in Lithuania who said they could get me a brand new ..172A shield (the right one) for around 35 Euro and send it for another 21Euro so I ordered it and, weeks later, they said they couldn't get one from their supplier after all so we're back to square one. Incidentally they're still offering them on their site!

Next week it's back to template time and then I'll buy a 1m sheet for £37 and, between that and your sheet, hopefully it'll be sorted at last. Fingers crossed. Thanks again for your help and I will get back to you - just don't hold your breath!
Stuart

I think a lot of testers would unlikely fail a car for the missing heat shield although strictly speaking yes its a fair accessment. Where are you in the country?

Well maybe not if I don't take it back to the same garage... but certainly show up on the DVLA website for MOT histories for any car. Are you a tester by any chance?

Yes. Dont ever check history before carrying out an MOT however majority have blue flashing lights lol

Hi Keith,
Finally progress! Bought an old, pretty mangled one off a local guy who was breaking his really poor condition A2 and with bits of your aluminium for brackets/large washers have just about got that issue sorted.
Trying now to (a) get a nearby business to take the buckle out of 2 wheels - (but "very busy for next few days".... that was a week ago)
OR (b) buy one of the sets of wheels on here for sale.
After that just get a pair of front shocks sorted then MOT again.
Will keep you posted. Thanks again for all the help.,
