Multiple brake warning lights and dealers

If you have a Sport model, with 17" wheels, the worn ABS loom is one of the first things Audi should have checked. The repair should also be free of charge, as the design fault was subject to a technical bullettin.

Cheers,

Mike

strange . . .

The fault seems to be intermittent now and I managed to drive about 3 miles before it kicked in this time . . . I have had a look and the wires don't appear to be damaged - anyway I have booked it in for next wednesday so will see how that turns up?

Hi rktec
As Skipton indicated, a diagnostic scan is the best starting point for troubleshooting most problems nowdays. If you don't have easy access to VagCom then a simple check you can do is inspect the ABS sensor wires on the front wheels. The wider tyres on the Sport models have a tendency to rub through these wires and cause this type of fault.

Cheers Spike

thanks for the info spike the wires are all worn out due to the 17" wheels dam you audi lolz.

Hi A2SPORT

As Skipton said in a previous post, Audi issued a service bulletin specifying that shorter sensor wires should be used on models with 17" rims. Part nos were 8Z0.927.904F for the front left wire and 8Z0.927.904G for the front right. Strangely these numbers dont appear to be listed in the later parts book. Its possible Audi have standardised on a shorter cable under a different part number but its worth asking if the old parts are obsolete and if so, what the supersession is. (personally I would go for the old part nos if you can get them)

Cheers Spike

No Need For Audi Parts Lol

Hey Spike

The ABS cable was torn so I had a close look at the cable and noticed there's no optical wiring in the cable.
Which is a pain if you wanna fix. So I decided to have a go soldering the two to gather once finished taped it all up and hey presto ABS light gone.

Optical wiring systems are only used on the A6, A8 and Q7 models, fitted with the MOST bus system.

No A2 has any optical communication as standard.

It's good that youhave repaired the break without resorting to the dealer - this type of repair will become more important in the years to come!

Cheers,

Mike

Hi
I am a new (female!) member - with the same prob (3 lights - traction control, "!" mark, abs and warning signal) coming on over several weeks, but then cancelling out if turn engine off/on. Eventually the Engine man light comes on and stays on - and Audi Stoke have put it down to same fault code F83/84? as quoted earlier. With a £900 bill to sort. As Im reluctant to go down that expensive route to find prob still there, I asked them to re-diagnose last week and in the process they wiped the ECU!! Which didnt cost me anything to replace - however they thought that the ECU may have contributed to the the orig prob and might be solved now. Unfortunately not.... 10 mins after driving...
Just wondered if you have now solved your prob "2max4fun" - and what the outcome was.
I have an A2 1.4 petrol.

Oops!

Thanks to all who helped with ideas on the cause of the problem. I printed them all off and handed them them to the dealer; also mentioned that 14 months is a long time for a dealer to find even an intermittant fault they could keep it till they had fixed it. With hindsight, this probably lacked diplomacy but really! 14 months and they are supposed to be Audi experts.

Anyway, the result is that they gave me long enough to get home then phoned me and told me they didn't know what was wrong with it and could they have it back when the fault was happening? (They already did and couldn't fix it then either) The fault has happened twice since on my way to work but when I started the car again it had gone.
Can anybody recommend a good auto electrician in the Hull area? Anybody ?

So they had all the accumulated knowledge of these pages and chose to do nothing!

This is exactly the sort of attitude that saw Mercedes go down the pan a few years back and Audi UK really need to get a grip on these franchises before the marque is irrepairably damaged.

Mike

Hi
The F84 (same as F83) brake recognition switch is part of the brake servo and not replaceable as a separate part. The assy is about £400 plus a similar ammount for labour so its the last thing anyone would want to change. Ref the attached link, other people have fixed this fault by replacing the brake master cylinder and 2 brake pressure sender units (think they screw into the underside of the master cylinder.

You could print this off and show it to your garage

Cheers Spike

Hi 2max4fun
As the fault is intermittent then I suspect the garage will be reluctant to do major repairs, like changing the brake servo, because if their diagnosis is wrong and it does not fix it they will probably not get paid for future warranty work needed to fully resolve the problem.
I'm assuming the fault code (00812) is the same each time and apart from the scare factor of the warning lights coming on, its not currently a major inconvenience. If so and the garage has put no time limit on doing the repair once the fault becomes 'permanent' then it may pay to be patient - it may be worth getting this in writing, and at the same time, ask them to confirm the car is totally safe to drive (there is nothing like the word 'safety' to focus the minds of a company)
Sorry I cant recall if your car still has Audi warranty but if so, you could write to Customer Services and ask for help.

Cheers Spike

update . . .

Our A2 went in today and I have just heard back from the dealer that the ABS sensor on 'one of the wheels' need to be replaced, and also that he has checked but he cant find any technical bulletin (or similar) relating to the abs wiring on the A2, therefore its going to cost £120 odd to repair.

Oh and he didnt have the fault code to hand but he would find out and get back to me - any ideas where the ABS sensor is located - didnt someone say it was under the dash?

Initially a hundred odd quid isnt too much so im not too concerned, however i would be grateful if anyone has a copy of the audi technical thigmy telling the dealerships what the 'known' fault is . . .

I have to say that I will still be looking to see if the wiring has been replaced (in wheel well) as well as the sensor (dont trust any dealer) as when I asked if they had changed the wiper blade also he asked which side!

The individual ABS sensors are in each hub, so there are 4 in total and the central controller in in the engine bay.

I will try to see if I can get the details of the Technical Bullettin, but rest assured, it was issued in late 2004/early 2005, however it is only related to vehicles factory equipped with 17" wheels.

Cheers,

Mike

thanks - seems strange for a sensor within the hub to go . . . anyway I will get that code and see, my car is a 2003 tdi sport with factory 17's . . . the sensor is on order, but when I go in I will quiz the chap on the bullettin - I wish I cousdl just go in and deal with the technician directly sometimes.

Hi rktec
Apologies if Skipton has already responded but I found a copy of the ABS sensor wire bulletin - see attached

Cheers Spike

Nice one Spike, thanks for that, much appreciated.

I am collecting the car today and have again asked for the fault code, which I will get when I arrive - I also asked if they had found out anything on the technical bullettin and was told that they (as an audi approved dealer/repairer) are not aware of any bulletins for the A2's abs system - worrying.

I will take this printout down with me and if it looks like the wires have been replaced as well I will be very suspicious - I dont mind paying for things which are faulty, but I would mind if they have ignored the bulletin so that they can charge me for the work and additional cost of replacing the sensor - I know Im cynical, but it's been developed over a long period.

Surely if there was a fault with the sensor it will have flagged up a fault code so will update tonight, cheers.

the outcome . . .

Right, now have the car back and fixed.

I showed the chap the technical bulletin (thanks again Spike) and he went away to ask the Technician - eventually he came back saying the reason they werent aware of this was because when each car comes in they scan the audi database for any known faults by chassis number - and as the bulletin states that the solution came into force in 10.02 my chassis number is after that of the problematic ones.

Ok says I, and sure enough upon checking the wires have not been replaced - just the abs sensor, however they didn't take a note of the fault code as i had expressly asked and it has now been wiped from my ecu and their system - hmmm (we need to get a second car soon and it will be another Audi - so perhaps I'm as well investing in a VagCom thingmy???).

Maybe I should stop being so quick to believe the worst in the dealers, especially as the old franchise used to be with Glenvaragil in Edinburgh but it has since changed to Lomond Motors, who now own all the Central Scottish Dealerships - Edinburgh Glasgow Perth Stirling etc . . .

The final cost was £32 (ex vat) for the sensor and £117 for 1.5r hrs labour - so when you add an extra £11.75 for a new wiper blade, the total inc vat was £189, so musnt grumble really eh?

Hopefully this might help somebody else?

Thanks for all the help!

But is it fixed?

Sorry to be sceptical but it always takes a few weeks for the fault to show again after Audi resets the fault memory, after that it happened (and still does) every couple of weeks. It usually happens just as I approach work. Slow speed, foot brake on, wheels to the left ready to turn at the junction after about 25 miles driving. On one occasion, I did run it several miles to the dealer where they spent the day not finding out what was wrong with it. I will be really interested to hear if your dealer really has fixed it. It might be worth driving to your dealer in Scotland. After the last time, I am reluctant to take any more information to the local dealer. I don't think they like it.

Intermittent ABS and brake warning lights.

Hi, I'm a new member. I bought my 51 plate (2001- 59000 miles) A2 1.4SE last week and so far I'm very happy with it.

Over the last couple of days the ABS and brake warning light have started to come on intermittently, however when the ignition is turned off and restarted the fault lights clear. There doesn't appear to be any problem with braking or performance, could this just be a fault with the sensors?

I am keen to get it looked at whilst still under warranty to avoid any nasty bills for Audi parts, however I am doubtful the garage will find the fault with it been intermittent. Is there anything I can check myself?

Hi and general update

Hello. I wish I could help but mine still has the problem even after Audi have spent lots of time on it. There is lots of helpful information on this forum from other members who have managed to solve it. Unfortunately, it appears to have more than one possible cause. I would suggest you get it checked out under warranty as it will have registered in the fault memory and you might be lucky enough to find a technician who knows what the problem is.
The general update bit is that AUDI uk called me to check on my "experience". The outcome of that is that AUDI Hull is picking the car up tomorrow morning and keeping it till it's fixed so here's hoping!!!! I will post updates as they happen and thanks to all who have added their own experiences of this problem. It really has helped.
Oh! and a bit more info: Computer Active issue 250 has an article on fault diagnosis using a PC and a reasonably priced software and cable kit. It also suggested looking at http://www.troublecodes.net/audi/ . I havn't tried this but it might be worth a look for anyone thinking of splashing out on an expensive test unit.
