I wouldn't bother with personnal plates in the UK, by the end of 2005 they will be worthless anyway, trust me I know.

hmmm maybe there is a new system coming that is replacing the current one that is supposed to run from the next 50 years... so if I'm not mistaken the last plates run out in 2051 or thereabouts... so 2005 sounds a bit strange...

A new system coming in wouldn't make any difference to old plates anyway. I speculate that it is something to do with banning private plates on new cars.

Sounds about right the government via the DVLA sell us all plates then stop us using them!!!!!

Ricardo what do we know that we all don`t ?

Spill the beans

I do not see a reason fro the Government banning them, after all they contol the market, they charge Vat on the sale, and if the vehicle is taken off the road they take the number back for nothing.

We have one, in the new format - her initials and date of birth (excluding year of course)

Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield are silver ? ? ?

Cant say too much, but from around 2005 number plates will be "special" and because of that the number will be fixed to the physical plate - soooo if somebody comes along with a screwdriver and steals the bit of yellow or white plastic they take the number aswell. Your replacement will have a different number on it and your old number will be marked as stolen until recovered. They may well still be valuable but could easily be stolen. Mind you it's debateable as to how useful they would be to thieves actually. Having said that, if your car got stolen, they will also "steal" your number. Then when they give your car a new identity and destroy the old plates your £25000 personnal number will cease to exist in a puff of smoke literally!!!

It may not happen of course, it all depends on "our" reaction to the recent news about "all vehicles to be fitted with GPS" - that's just a smoke screen to check our "civil liberties reaction" to big brother etc...

Seems a bit silly to me. at the momment if your car gets stolen with a personal plate on and isn`t found you have to wait a year and a day to get he reg back.

Hmmm now it makes sense... but it sounds totally silly... They make thousands from selling these plates so I doubt they will stop it.

From what jon said it is much the same at the moment when I personal plate gets stolen... so maybe a year and a day and you have the "right" to your £25000 plate back anyway?

As to GPS: no way hosé! GPS is the easiest way to determine speed between two points. So it is not about sending you a bill for which lane you were driving in (and remember the current GPS is only accurate to 5m so there is NO way they can charge different prices for different lanes). They will give us all GPS under the pretence it is for road tolls, but within 5 years it will be used to measure everyone's speed and send you your monthy speeding fines via mail without the need of expensive GATSO cameras...

Sadly i fear Johann is right, i have heard people talk about the points system being raised to 20 to compensate for people who are using their points up on gatso`s

[3]Just so long as they don't bring back window tax. A previous long lamented government's idea centuries ago. A2's have 8 lights!
All governments tend to be [17] after the first term. Adopt the Italian view and have a new one every six months![24]

The "get it back after 12 months" won't happen if everything goes "according to plan". I doubt if the GPS thing will ever happen there are easier and cheaper ways. Also the "we know where you are thing" is not just about speeding, "they" will know when and where a car is. So tax disc dodgers, insurance dodgers etc will cease to exist. Also over 80% of people who are presently being "chased" for non-payment of the congestion charge in London drive cars that dont exist (false plates) this will also stop overnight. All very big brother if you ask me, but being British we will just role over and accept it all as everybody else in Europe rightfully laughs at us (all IMHO of course).
