Purple Seats

When the rear bench seat is tumbled like this, while the outer headrests point down into the rear floorwells, there's no room for the centre headrest because of the exhaust tunnel. Audi very thoughtfully provided somewhere to store it 👍

Yeah.
That's deffinitelly called engineering. :)
BTW, is it true that A2 is engineered by students?
I heard a story, not sure if it's true, that the car is a result of a practical part of a university diploma. I don't know how to spell it in English correctly.

there were a couple of 2-door A2 concepts for car shows that involved teams of VAG apprentices in the construction / preparation - I think VAG still do this with cars prepared for the Worthersee car festival (recently cancelled). The A2 itself was definitely not entrusted to students - as made clear by the A2 book a lot of very talented engineers were involved in the exacting design process over a number of years.

Did you try to just remove them?
A 4-butt's rear has 4 clips and 4 holes. If the bench sits on the same clips/holes, maybe you can do something about it?
On the other hand, what's wrong with a possibility to carry an additional kid in the middle? :)

All my kids are grown up, and I doubt I'll ever need to carry 5, just me and stuff. Plus we have an A4 Avant.
4 seaters are just more versatile.

A guy I bought some parts off was left with the shell and inorder to scrap it he hired a Stihl saw to cut it up.
He couldn't believe the construction that went into the A,B and C pillars and the sills, compared to a normal car. He said it really was an over engineered design masterpiece.
Due to the lightness of the shell and the Stihl saw hire he made about £50 on it.

i think he could've just sold the shell as is. It'd be much more worth. But he did his way. I guess in his circumstances that we don't know it was the right way for him.

I personally got my seats out and drive my car as a cargo van.
Consider it weight reduction and a possibility to load stuff like a guitar or a speaker set for the occasions they are necessary for. :)

I just knew there was going to be a "clever Audi" answer to that question instinctively.

Well, as the back part is bigger in height than the butt part when folded, my solution would be to tweak the middle headrest for the following (just read further :)) and make the middle of the bench a bit shorter so there is enough room to fold the headrest forward. :)
Then I would earn a "Clever Dogbrain" nomination. :D
