Success! I examined the passenger side lock to check the orientation of the cylinder in relation to the cog, and once I lined up the driver side lock the same way I was able to push the protruding bit back by hand and was able to get it out. That plate under the cog seems to move only when the key is turned 45 degrees, but only for a few mm. Once it is pushed out the key no longer engages the cog. Problem is it doesn't want to stay in place and pops up under load. Still thinking if it is worth trying to glue it in place but that would be risky as if it fails again I'll have to go through the same process again to get it out.
By the way, are left and right lock interchangeable? The appear the same but they have different coloured cogs (white on passenger side and black for driver side).
