Servicing and Cambelt Costs??

Hi Mike the £71.08 is for a Genuine Water Pump and Fitting, they say that the labour is to actually tkae it off and fit new one and to drain then refill water system and bleed system and for antifreeze.
I'm asuming they dont atually have to take off the water pump to be able to do thr cam belt??,- Hence the extra labour.
This garage is good but they wont do nothing for nothing- not even replacing a bulb!!.

I understand what you're saying, but as the pump is driven by the belt and is exposed during belt replacement, it is so little extra work, it's untrue.

If you're happy with the quote, then go for it.

Cheers,

Mike

Think I was charged circa £40 for a pattern pump with brass impeller. I'm happy with this as if the pump fails its really a new cam belt regardless. I'd query the genuine part or ask for a longer warranty.

My garage was told by Audi that the water pump would need to be a genuine one or any warrenties would be void, ie the paint and anti corrosion warrenty and I think in the future there will be an issue regarding the alloy fatige(sp?) cracking arround the door hinges.
Otherwise I would have prefered the brass water pump.
Also I dont like the idea of paying for them to change the pump but alas all the garages are going to charge for this hence I dont seem to have a choice.

BTW Anyone know what the garage means when it says I need special PD oil for Ollie??.

Regards Andy.

Not sure on the PD ref, perhaps it has something to do with the Vag group Pump Diuse (spelling?) engine fitted to most if not all vag group engines (TDI). But i'm prob waaaaay off the mark on that one

Emm, you're completely correct on the PD issue - basically, they'll need to use an oil meeting VW 506.01 or VW507, which are the specs laid down by VW/Audi for the engine oil in their TDi cars.

However, Audi are telling porkies about having to use the genuine water pump to avoid voiding the warranty.

Basically, if you use something non-genuine then Audi could (and probably would) not honour any warranty relevant to that part.

For example, if you use a pattern oil filter, your warranty could be in doubt on anything that the oil comes into contact with - basically the engine.

If your anti-roll bar failed, they can't claim that the oil filter was a contributing factor, so must honour the warranty on that part.

As someone who has done more mods to my car (which is still under warranty) than the average owner, I do speak from experience on the matter. The last warranty job will have cost Audi well over £1000 (flywheel and clutch replacement), but was carried out and fully covered.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for that guys,
Just one more thing, would you therefore recommend a pattern pump over the Audi one and if so is there a certain make of pattern pump I should tell my garage to get.

You help and advice has been much appreciated on this THANKYOU!!:)

Hi Andyman
I would still recommend the genuine Audi water pump and at around £25 exchange its good value. I changed mine when doing the timing belt and at the time the parts guys told me they did not keep them in stock as there was little demand - a good sign that failures are not common.
Make sure your garage also uses the genuine Audi antifreeze

Cheers Spike

Thanks Spike, I have told the garage that all items must be genuine Audi and this includes oil and antifreeze and i shall remind them of this.

Cheers all, your all wonderful, ahem in a non-poncy way of course:eek:

Ipswich independants

I can recommend 2 local independents:
-Richard Pipe Engineering, Betts Ave, Martlesham Heath.
-Broadlands in Bixley Farm.

I've used both and been happy with the service, which says a lot as I'm a past/occasional DIY mechanic and hence don't have the wool pulled over easily :)

Broadlands doesn't advertise and they are ex-directory! They get enough business from repeat customers & recommendations. PM me if you want their number (you can look the others up).

Avanti autos in Princes St is also very good but they're Italian car specialists. Worth a phone call to see if they'll do the work, though.

All 3 have also been used by colleagues at a large local employer and come well recommended.

Mark

Mark thanks for that,
I have used Broadlands before but had a very shoddy service from one of their mechanics who was fairly new at the time and the problem was not totaly solved.
Andy at Broadlands was very good though on all previous occassions and I have asked for a quote and so far 3 days later they still havent got me one!!??.
You must be very near me (I assume) to have used those companies and indeed I used to live near Broadlands on Broke Hall if you know it and Broadlands was very handy though have now moved to Ravenswood it you know that area.
If I get time i may try the Martlesham Heath one as that is where I work (mostly).
Nice toknow there are other members in the area, I've seen quite a few A2's arround here but none of them seem friendly and indeed my wife banned me from waving or flashing as I got too many strange looks:eek:.
Anyway keep an eye out for a Silver Sport:)

Skipton, hope this avatar is more to your liking )

My car has just over 50,000 miles, and I have been following this thread due to my close proximity to Ipswich. I need a service in 2000 miles so have a little general information for Members. My A2 is on the variable service system and had one service at 29,000 miles in 2005.

Audi Ipswich quote: £444 for service + £58 for brake Fluid, and they said the Cambelt needed to be done. So the total bill £920.88

VW Colchester: £315 for service + £350 for Cambelt change. total £665

Audi Norwich: £330 for service (Cambelt not required till 80,000 miles) + £65 Brake Fluid. Total bill £395.
I have a K+N filter and I fit my own carbon pollen filter so the £330 came down to £315.

So as you can see they all make it up as they go along. I quizzed Norwich about the cambelt and she said it was because the 2004 model allows the car to run to 80,000 miles or 4 years. I am concerned that the dealer are trying to scare me into changing the cambelt before I need to, or the service staff aren't competent at the vehicle requirements and don't know the facts. Either way you can see a big difference in the 3 quotes I received. 5 mins work :D And i will be going to Norwich

Hi Emm
Audi keep changing their minds about cambelt change periods - this is the info I got from my dealer when I asked in Oct 2006

''I called in at Audi Teesside today and asked about cambelt change intervals. Both the Service and Parts guys were very helpful and provided the following info
Timing belt should be changed after 4 years on ALL models or at the following mileage (whichever comes first)
1.6FSi and TDi..................60,000 miles
TDi - from May 2004......... 80,000 miles
1.4 petrol ........................No mileage limit
For those brave (or daft) enough to do it themselves, a kit is available which includes the belt, tensioner pulley and idler roller at £88 + vat. The water pump costs £23 +vat exchange.
Service said they don't automatically change the water pump and rarely see problems with them.''

Assuming Norwich are on the ball then 4 years or the specified mileage limit still seems to be correct.

Cheers Spike

Thanks for the confirmation Spike,

I told Ipswich Audi I could buy a car for £900 and drive it for a year, to which they replied "yeah but it won't be an Audi". Smart arse:D

Anyway it pains me to go to Audi as I work in the motor trade and can get all these parts for under £100 quid probably. But I want the Audi service history, and at the end of the day its only my second service with over 50,000 so I can't complain......

Still going to Norwich though;)

I did have a brief thought when the person spoke from norwich, like there was a different price for a new customer compaired to a regular customer, just like car insurance. you never know

A quick chat with Bath Audi gives the following daft info on Cambelt changes:

1.6FSi (what I have) - change at 5 years, check at 90,000 KM (about 56K miles). Apparently to check they have to remove a bunch of stuff anyway which costs nearly as much in labour anyway - so probably gonna get it fixed now regardless.

Prices seem to have been hiked quite a bit too:

Bath:
3rd AVS service £340
Cambelt £585!
Waterpump £30.91
Brake fluid £105

Swindon:
AVS £260
Cambelt & pump £500
Brake fluid £50 (if done at same time)

Newbury:
AVS £350
Cambelt £550
Pump £60
Brake fluid £90

Definitely going ring around this time.

Ben

Ok after a ring round the VW garages:

Chippenham VW:
AVS £270
Cambelt & Waterpump £557
Brakefluid £55

Swindon VW:
AVS £280
Cambelt & Waterpump £350
Brakefluid £50

Probably gonna go with Swindon VW as this as the cheapest non-driving-up-to-the-midlands option.

re. Chippenham VW

Suggest you bell the independent Audi VW Centre at Bromham near Chippenham. Their hourly labour charge is way less than Audi franchised dealers and, on the basis of my experience, their service is excellent.
