Indeed, the ABS system, along with a few other modules, is able to self-clear faults if it detects that the cause of the fault has been rectified. But looks like I’m wrong
I had exactly this problem and no ABS code in VCDS which is a puzzleIt should have logged and abs error code which being safety related will not clear on its own

not yet car is laid up. I am waiting a new abs sensor as after splicing new abs wire to old wires in engine bay the abs light is still on. No VCDS code shown. Brake pad wear lights on but no place to connect them so going to short 2 and 24 in blue socket in Dash. If it is still on then after the new sensor and shorting I will replace the bearings. there is a vcds code 00283 which suggests left side (my passenger side) but the wires rubbed through were on the drivers side. Maybe vcds left means looking from the front at the car.Is there a fix for the abs light being on ?

My car is year 2001 so spedo not a problem. Your pic of the ABS wire being rubbed through was the same as mine (Drivers side) exactly which I only discovered when changing the Brakepads. Brakepad wear light and ABS and stability control lights were on on the dash. VCDS gave 00283 codeAre you saying you had exactly the same problem i had?

175 65 r15Leaving aside the eventual fix for your 00283 code for now, i'm interested to know what wheel and tyre size you're using?
Ref this old thread, the looms were certainly too long on early cars, particularly if 17" rims were fitted - https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/abs-esp-warning-again.3325/post-162186
