The great not getting to and or not staying at 90 saga for the 1.4 tdi

Check behind the front grills on mondeo and Kugas from 2014, also I think recent bmw have them, they stay closed when engine cold then open as required and even adjust. Very simple plastic cowling clipped to radiator and controlled by little motor. Just like audi a2 climate system, only it works šŸ˜†

A2 climate works very well, if that is what I've got?

I don't think the shutters will make much difference to an A2 warm up, or more correctly the issued being discussed here. Perhaps if you park in a garage. it will stop the coolant in the radiator chilling but that is not the problem we have here. The problem I believe is that the engine in certain driving conditions does not generate enough heat to heat up fully when supplying heat to the heater matrix. If the heater matrix cools the engine so that the thermostat does not open the radiator contributes nothing to cooling so the shutter can make no difference?
Thoughts?
 
I agree that the radiator is not the main factor here.
A bit radical, but coolant is circulating around the engine, (and heater matrix), even though the thermostat is closed, so fitting variable restriction in the cooling circuit, close to the pump outflow, would reduce the cooling efficiency, during warm up, and allow the engine to operate close to it's ideal temperature.
Bit like a second thermostat, but one that is never closed.

I see what you mean now, I agree not a real benefit as radiator is secondary circuit. A radiator flap would only be useful to stop the radiator loosing too much heat once car is already heated up fully. So only useful on a cold day perhaps when you switch heater on hot adn driving slow.

I mean the climate flap motors, pretty prone to being troublesome in the auto climate system I understand? Well have been in the ones I have driven anyway, perhaps been unlucky :-)

When you realise that the flaps are moving, most of the time, to maintain the chosen temperature, that
having to replace one after 15 or so years, should be no great surprise. It's predominantly the heat flap, as it runs hot, and is the most active.

That problem, had it under warranty. They did something to it and it had been fine since.
 
I drove my A2 today, after a decent period of inactivity... couldn't for the life of me get the temperature over 70c.

It's only been around 5/6c outside, but even after 20 mins the temp gauge hasn't moved.

Is this the start of an issue or is this acceptable?

Even going back to day one... it's has always been slow to increase temperature.

depends what type of driving the 20 mins driving was doing, if slow moving / town type driving then I'd say 70 was about normal for the TDI, assuming no webesto fitted / turned on

If it was motorway / fast A roads then after 20 mins you should be at 90, infact more like 15 mins

it also depends on the cabin requested temp, the hotter you like to be the colder the engine will run

Or the thermostat is dead?

I found mine had failed when the car didn't reach temperature at the same point on a regular journey.

It was a dawdle of a drive to be fair, and I hadn't got the climate on... I think I've got Webasto.

I have only started using the car after a couple of years brake, so I've got a lot to learn.

The temp gauge did move but couldn't make it about 70.

As my list of replacement parts is already massive, I'll add a thermostat to the list. Now I'm typing this, I remember many years ago, having the temperature sensor replaced. Perhaps this would need changing too.

Take it for a motorway run, if it gets to 90 take the thermostat of your list.
 
Regarding the thermostat - I also have problem with not getting to 90 degrees, than I have replaced the thermostat with a genuine VAG one ( but it might be a false one) - and the effect was worse than before i this job.
Not giving up I have bought another one (manufactured by Calorstat), first tried it in a pot (opening and closing temperatures) - which were better than with my "old" one. I have installed it to my car and the result is great - it takes about 3-4km of driving to get the engine to 90 degrees, but most of all, when it get to this temperature, it is not dropping (as it was before).
Afterwards I checked the new "OEM" one and after it open, it is not closing back at all...

I guess that the conclusion is that it is good to check the thermostat operation before installation in the car.

Yes I had a genuine one that was faulty out of the box - seems to be a hard part to manufacture.

That said, the likelihood of a faulty part seems to increase when you stray from OE - you got lucky this time around Iā€™d say.

Try switching the climate to Off, using the Off button, (not the rotary switch). This will close the flaps, so that little or no air will pass through the heater matrix.
If the engine temperature rises quicker, and ends up higher, you have the answer.
