The Noise Returns.....

coo, i'll give it a week or two before i go for it. the abs light and the asr light came on today when i was driving to work. there was a big red exclamation mark in a circle light on the display too. went away when i turned the car off and didn't come back when i turned it on again.

Ours did that once, when driving in heavy rain on the M25. Didn't come back on after we stopped for a couple of hours and never did it again....

cool, nice one. i'll look out for it in case it comes on again. still looking for alloys for it though.

A2_SAT, could be the cables leading to the ABS & ESP sensors. Search for 'ABS & ESP Waning', just had mine done for the second time! Usually on Sport models, coz of the 17" wheels.

me too

hey i've had my A2 about 10months now and throughout that time i've had the same rattle. although i seem to have two different rattles. one of them is coming from behind the radio so i'm guessing i just have to tie up my wire properly. the other one is coming from behind the instrument dials and i haven't brought it to a garage to get checked out. it'll probably cost me a fortune to bring it to audi as i went to book it in for my timing belt to be done along with a service only to be told that it'll cost me about a grand euro (i'm in ireland). A Grand!!! i think thats about 650-700 sterling but i think thats a bit excessive?? i got my old mechanic in dublin to do it for a few hundred less. So has anyone solved the mystery of the rattle yet?

Guess what? Yup after a fairly long run, yesterday, the rattling started then the engine noise came on! Still there this morning, really bad when pulling away, if fact made the whole cabin vibrate! Then it just stopped! Grrrrrrrr! How the hell am I going to get this sorted when ever I get to taking to a garage it stops?!? I might just bite the bullet take it in with maersk's suggestion......

Sounds like a problem with the exhaust to me. Mounting bracket needs tightening or replacing. The exhaust, cat or heat shield is probably catching the underside of the car - hence louder in car than outside. When you're driving away the torque of the engine will cause it to move more and make it sound worse.

Thanks Simon, wouldn't the noise be constant if it was the exhaust, rather than one day every few months?

Hi Fiona
Another theory based on Simon's suggestions - maybe the catalyst ceramic element has broken loose inside the casing, occasionally frees up due to road vibration but is wedged back in position by exhaust back pressure.

PS what is the latest on the ABS sensor wires rubbing through - I commented on your experiences in the fat wheels thread

Cheers Spike

If the bracket is only slightly loose it could cause the problem to be intermittent - exhaust metal and brackets expand and contract. I have a TVR which used to make a terrible clunking noise when pulling away - I thought oh no there's something seriously wrong with the drive train, occasionally I could feel vibration/resonance throught the whole car - turned out to be nothing more than the exhaust which had moved too close to the chassis. I quick trip to my local garage sorted it out. If a mechanic put it up on ramps it should be pretty easy to find what's loose under there.

Good luck!

Si

Thanks Si & Spike. Luckily my Dad has a pit at home so I'll run it over there and have a filch around underneath!

The ABS cable issue is all sorted, stood my ground with Audi and they fixed it, no quibbles and gave the car a full valet, looked spanking when I collected it! What really helped is that the guy who took over from the girl who first dealt with it was much better!

Have just put this under servicing topic, but it seems relevant here to:
"Hi All,

I posted athread a while ago in the general forum - 'the noise returns'. Well, it's still ongoing and thanks to all who responded. We loooked last night and found a bracket loose on the bottom intercooler hose and thought that was it, but no afraid not.

The noise it constant now, so REALLY want to get it sorted, what happens it that when you pull away or if the engine is pulling hard, in the cabin you hear a clanking, rumbling noise, like something metal is loose and is flapping around. Listening from the engine there is only a slight jangling noise. I'm guessing that the cabin is amplifying the noise?

Anyway, still happening this morning, so I took it to my brothers garage, Rangers in Guildford and they thought it could be the auxillary belt tensioner.
They took the bonnet off, which I'm sure Audi don't often do! If a laptop doesn't diagnose a problem, then there isn't a problem!

So what are your thoughts on this? Does this sound like a possible cause?"

OK, so I know I am the only one replying to this now, but I'm used to talking to myself, been with my chap for 11 years, so enough said...

Just an update to this thread, in case anyone is interested. I went to Guildford Audi today, explained the above problem is now constant and the very nice chap on reception booked it in for next Tuesday. He said that Audi DO know about a problem with 14000 TDi's with the EGR valve and there is a very simple modification!

I'll let you know the results from Tuesday......

Fiona, great to read your posts but as I dont drive a deisel havent had the same problems. Hope you get this sorted out once and for all. I was at guildford on tuesday had to go to the Royal Surrey then nipped into your tesco store. Much better than the one at Horsham
