The Price of Insurance

I am in the process of buying an A2 1.6 Sport FSI. Before I shook the salesman's hand I wanted to check the cost of insurance, lucky I did as most quotes were over £500. I am 39 years old with a clean record so think what I have been quoted is ludicrous. The only one worth considering was for £397 and that was from that company with the name of a rather big mammal. Can anyone recommend an insurance company?

Many thanks in advance for any information

Are you talking about elephant.co.uk

I've had my policy with them for the last 3 years. There always helpful, polite and most important the best quote around for young drivers like myself.

Let me tell you a story...

I am 28 years old and have 6 years protected no claims bonus. My insurance renewal one month ago came in from Admiral at just over £700.00 for my A2 with business class 1 and annual mileage of 15,000 miles. I thought it was a little high so started to shop around.

I got a few online quotes including one from Elephant.co.uk - which worked out at around £360 with the identical policy to the one I was being offered by Admiral + plus with a bonus of only £50 voluntary excess.

I contacted Admiral and asked how they could justify charging me over £700 when Elephant came in at £360. The next thing they said to me completely took me by suprise...I was told that Elephant is part of Admiral and as a loyal and long standing customer, there was a chance they would be able to price match the Elephant price and they would have to call me back to confirm.

24 hours later, they called me back and sure enough they matched the Elephant policy exactly. So I went with it and saved over £300 !!

So, I do now wonder how many people are being ripped off by Admiral when they could just go to Elephant and buy a cheaper identical policy which effectively is being provided by Admiral.

You will find a similar story with Direct Line and Budget, same firm, but Budget is a lot cheaper, and Direct Line won't price match it. Strange or what? I don't currently have a problem, the above story is re: my neighbour insuring a mitsubishi Shogun

Personally, I've found Direct Line to be one of the cheapest for us over the last couple of years. I'm 28 & my wifes 30

The A2 was about £400 for the pair of us fully comp, protected etc. Our other policy was for the Punto HGT (group 15) at about £700 and the Passat V5 (group 16) is £750.

Every year I shop around and haggle as I've had some ludicrous quotes in the past - £1700 for the Punto from Norwich Union. They didn't quote me happy.

A2's don't make very good sledges:(

I was quoted £380 fully comp (me + mrs) and I have 0 NCB. I'm 31 which may make a difference. £700 with 6yr NCB seems silly.

Of course this was before Audi gave me the free insurance :D

try www.confused.com - enter details once and they try all the online companies for you within one hour - peopleschoice came in cheapest at £470. I was with esure - very good value at £370, then I had a claim - joyrider hit my car whilst it was parked and drove off. Renewal came in at almost £700!! Frizzell are covering me for £400 - three years no claims (reduced due to claim), 34 chartered surveyor with local authority living in Leeds, 10,000 miles including business use. Try Audi insurance - arranged by Boncaster who run insure.co.uk and part of Cox insurance (their quote for me was £525).

I've heard bad stories about elephant's claim handling which puts me off them - BTW esure were fantastic in dealing with my claim.

£242 fully comp with protected NCD,£100 XS, 2 drivers aged 31 and 36, clean licences. 1.4SE, Thats with Tesco (Pretty sure its direct line under the Tesco brand, but cheaper). They were also by far the cheapest for the Beetle.

With Direct Line £350 Protected No Claims, Business use and SDP for a 28year old.

This was a good £50 less than anyother.

My girlfriend used to work for an Insurance company and I told her from inception,, I hate them and would never grow to love them.

Each year when I am looking for a new policy I just start off with the biggest load of B/S I can hit them with about prices that I have been quoted and see if they will price match.

Each time I just keep adding something extra until I get what I want.

My current policy, offers me just about every conceiveable extra for two named drivers that I could want for just £33/month,, I feel that I am getting good value for money..

Of course the real test is if you need to make a claim,, I do like their new for old policy in the first 12 months.. will try and squeezed this one out of them next year if they try and put the price up.. I can ususally swing a price freeze in the first year just by upping the B/S level.

As I am one of those, onced described, "Boringly safe drivers" with a fair bit of professional and advance tution under my belt, my claim record for accidents is very good so far.

We are with Tesco as well around £300 for two named drivers, 8000 miles pa, 20 years no claims protected. The cheapest we could find.

The sting is £30 per month and £700 excess for my son (learner) to drive under supervision!

Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield are silver ? ? ?

Erskine,

I think that the Old for New policy is pretty standard on most fully comp insurances if the car is less than a year old and you are the first registered keeper. You shouldn't have to haggle or pay extra for this.

What I meant was I want to try and see if I can get next year too,, after all I will look after my ride like it was my child..

Only had my A2 (1.4SE TDI) a month, so investigating the forum's been fun! So thought I'd make my maiden posting by adding to this topic...I went through A-Plan and asked them to beat my quote of £374 from the AA. They came back with a great deal from AXA: £320 with no XS at 20K pa, business, etc. Very pleasing - especially compared to Audi's own quote at £650!

Have just agreed today, to buy an ex-demo 1.4TDI SE.
My present insurers (Zurich) have quoted £295.00 for us (45 & 37), business use and £100 excess - big difference on Audi 100 2.6 estate that its replacing - £535.

Can't wait until next week until we pick it up !!
