Today I.....

I think there are a few about already?

Basically I used retrofitlab.com

Heated my lights at gas mark 1.5-1.7 (let oven fully heat up)

Lights in for 10min is very safe. Probably could do 20min I got scared though.

Retrofitlab website, provide fairly clear instructions for the electronics. They have a few videos on taking lights apart too on YouTube.

I found it very hard to take apart my first headlight (hours of work) to pull apart.

Second light I left in the oven longer not hotter. (Came apart in 10min or so of work) much easier.

The butyl they provide to reseal the light goes very soft and provided a good reseal at little effort. (10-12min in oven at gas mark 1.5 was about right me)

Things I noted.

Careful cleaning the silver foil in AND around the light housing. With a little moister it will come away.

Both projectors will point outwards ever so slightly. This is normal.

Tools used

Small wood chisel to clear away old sealant.
Single flat head screw driver to help pry apart.
Some gloves
Some adjustable pliers to pull together when reattaching.

I did this about 4 years ago, fitted 55 watt HID's into the projectors
They have been very good since, the beam cutoff gets good comments every year on the MOT
Well worth the effort, my headlights where slitable so didn't have the hassel of baking in the hoven

I also left the high beam halogens in place, so on main beam I get the 55 Watt HID and the 65W halogen - its like day light :)

Very nice!

I drive a lot at night time, and the Audi A2 is just not that good especially if you can't switch on high beams all the time.

For the xenons they run at 35W. And the bi-xenon is what makes my lights work with the original high beams together with the xenons FYI! They have a solenoid that activates when you turn high beams on which further opens the xenons while activating the halogens. If that makes sense? ??

Yes mine are exactly the same, a solenoid flips up a little metal flap for high beam and lowers it for low beam, on mine I have 55W HID for dip and main beam, and also for main beal the 65W halogen from the std main beam reflector - works really well

Thanks for the hint on the supplier, their webpage explained it well. Did you go for the 4300K?

unless a set of heated sports leathers or leather & alcantaras turn up in near-perfect condition for significantly less, this is probably the way I’ll go.
Simple leather would be my first choice over Alcantara every-time, especially if you have kids. I have owned two Lancia Integrale's and an Audi RS4 (before kids) all with combinations of Alcantara interiors. However, even without sticky toddler fingers the (lighter grey) Audi Alcantara always looked worn and dirty, so swapped for an RS6 with plain leather. However, a friend recolonised his classic Ferrari (from black to light grey) and you'd never have known after he'd finished. Very much look forward to seeing which way you go! :)

... Simply got to replace the god awful aftermarket stereo with a good ol’ Concert II and boy does it look happy (in a robotic face sort of way).

Apologies less complex than everyone else’s upgrades but hey ho ?

I got 6500k... But next time I will get 5000k or something I think. I didn't know what I was buying at the time.

7500k+ is blue.
6000k - 7500k is white blue
4000k - 5500k is white (if I remember correctly which is what I want)

I would agree 5000k is about right, 6000k is a harsh white with a tinge of bluey white to it, 7500k is very harsh and the bluey white is very prominent
Also the higher the K value the less light is actually output
I went with 55W HID's at 6000K, but would replace them with 5000K if I had the chance

Today I took delivery of OE51XBB for the second time. :) I was the original owner back in 2002 and now 19 years later she's back. Thanks to @Davidkinton for maintaining her for the last couple of years and thanks for the boot full of spares. I would really like to source a set of 17" 9 spokes if anyone knows of some around the M62 corridoor.
what a lovely thing to do buying back a car you owned so long ago - I've never done that, I would love to buy back my old 911, but would need to sell a kindey and other organs to pay for it now
Are you sure that you want to fit 9 spoke 17" with the state of the roads, they are a very soft wheel so getting a set that are round will be a challenge and kepping the mround even more so
What about the A1 17" if you must go to 17"

It originally came with 16" 6 spokes but I always liked the look of the RS4 type 9 spokes, I didnt know they were soft as you mentioned, maybe I'll return it to the 16" ones. I want to keep it standard A2 spec also which rules out the A1 wheels. Maybe time for a rethink ?

@Tlehall Nice to see standard OEM stereo. You can at a later date IF YOU WANT TO replace the worn buttons on the stereo ( just buy ANY Concert 2 from any Audi ) and swap over the better buttons. The climate panel buttons are a bit more contentious, for a perfect match either an original A2 hard touch or an excellent A2 soft touch. For a "blacker" button solution then the hard touch from an Audi A4 circa 2000 ( unit looks the same except fan grille sticks up higher ) can be used but only to supply donor buttons.

Picture of a suitable A4 unit. The fan intake is at the top full of dust.

@Nick Fully agree the Audi A2 sport 17" alloys are very soft. But as you are aware about the RS4 16" replicas, they are also available in 17" and are dual PCD of 5x100 and 5x118. They look very similar th the Audi sports but are far more rigid. I run them on very poor road surfaces and they still run straight and true. Here is a picture on my car. Actually have 2 sets one with summers and the other winters.

I have a soft touch from my car which I am going to swap the buttons over just like you said. Then it's up for sale if anyone wants. I found myself a brand new hard touch a few months ago I am using.

The buttons will be blacker than the unit though!

Today I rediscovered how much fun it is to drive an A2 really rather quickly, even in inclement weather. I left home later than intended but early enough that the roads had more or less nothing on them (other than occasional pools of standing water!) and so drove with zero regard for economy. My little unmapped tdi 75 fairly flew! Most fun I’ve had in ages. ?

Someone I know took there little tdi75 in a very quiet M4... they had to slow down at about 115mph though still had more left... ?
