Today I.....

Hi ,
Here are some pictures of my dampening adventures?. It was induced by the wish to upgrade the audio in the car. I think the main result is the isolation from outside roadnoise and vice versa. Outside you have no idea at what level I listen to music?.
I bought bitumen plates of a no-name brand through ebay in I think 3mm thickness. I think the fact that you dampen the outer shell surfaces gives the best results by adding sone weight and bringing its own frequency down to the inaudible for us humans.

Looks like this deserves its own thread! Fascinating.

This is really interesting and opportune. I have my headlining out at the moment so took the opportunity to deaden the roof. Hope the 2mm pads allow the headlining to be refitted ok!

I've read this has been done before and worked out ok with thw 2mm pads. It will be a snug fit but you will be pleased?. Good job!

(Yes)today I ran into unexpected issues removing, and especially, refitting the first front strut following a top mount service.

Dealt with the known tricksy access on RH top bolts just fine, splayed the strut clamp with a fine cold chisel, but struggling to get it fully back home as the locating tang obviously goes in the very same slot. I wouldn't mind so much but I've done both front struts on LASi and Cobalt II, both without any issues. Is there a tool I can reproduce? I've clearly forgotten what trick I used only a few months ago

Otherwise refurb of my £300, 204K mile TDi going well, will update in due course :)

Thank you all, in my befuddled state I've missed the fact there is a bit of strut not being blocked by the tang: I'm heading to main Rusty Workshop in a minute so will make a tool directly. Hopefully tale of complete success to follow later!

Thanks again :)

Today I went out to get the keys off my brother-in-law and checked the car over ready for my trip tomorrow - stuff loaded, tyres pumped up to full load pressures, screen wash checked, and then I came to check the oil:

So now I’m very very glad I bought a new one as a preventative measure from @CreweAudi

Happened to me as well, I always wonder whether the bit that broke off could do any actual damage inside the engine... Maybe best not to think about it.

The end of the dipstick will just swim around in the sump. Thousands of A2s will have this. Nothing to worry about. ?

The dipstick is not that old David so it shows just how susceptible they are to breakage. Love the fact that Audrey still bears her original Newcastle Audi front plate surround.

That’s interesting Dave - I wondered if the dipstick might be the original - it sounds like it’s no older than 5 years or so!

Is there a knack to avoiding breaking them I wonder- save not using them?! Another man-maths justification for Colour DIS perhaps @timmus ?

And on the plate surround - That’s part of Merlin / Audrey’s history, it will be staying on forever. ?

You can also see the plug for the Calix block heater in that shot - DS Motorsport made such a neat job of that.

I completed a whole week with no A2 - my current steed, "Bluey", is in Sheffield for his annual holiday (AKA MOT test and any jobs I couldn't get to do myself owing to weather/no garage/health/too cold) at my favoured garage.

Bluey was still there this morning, I noticed as I went past. I spotted it behind the locked gate, now I know where to look out for it!

. . . . . became a one car household again, having got rid of the Jaguar. What a piece of cr4p that was. Please, I implore anyone even considering one to think twice, think again and walk away.

The money is in my account now from the dealer who bought it, so I can let loose. Lovely looks, but awful in every other regard and so glad to be rid of it.

Roll on Monday when the Tesla lands.

Ha!!! I knew when I aired my opinion about JLR products being badly made just like in the days of BL there was seething rage bubbling behind your very measured response.

Was it an F Pace? If so my brother in law has just purchased one despite me advising against it.

I did this same job in my old BMW 535d, I used 13 sheets of Dynamat in the doors floors and boot. I hardly made any difference, but it was already a quiet car.

Ian, let's see. It rained like hell today and at least the roof didn't sound like a drum!

Yes, it was an F-Pace.

I can't see the new facelift ones being any better to be honest and the list of issues with mine were very long. Apart from looking lovely (but this is subjective, I acknowledge) and handling pretty well for such a large car, the problems include:

very rattly engine (2.0 diesel) with no refinement and little power
very uncomfortable seats (despite them being the 10-way memory electric seats)
very cramped (more driving space in the A2, seriously)
not the best quality plastics
terrible software
unresponsive to button presses both on the console and the locking buttons on the door handles
auto tailgate never worked reliably (hit me more times than the spring-loaded one on Tank)
poor dealer backup
poor build quality
rusting discs all around (a common issue apparently)
rusting drive shafts (on a 3 year old car??)
poor fuel economy (low thirties per gallon for a 2.0 TDI is pathetic)
drinks adblu for fun

The final straw for me was that the car was a mongrel of 2017 and 2018 parts. Apparently very common to use parts between model years and it meant in my case that I could never have a tow bar fitted and coded in (and the dealer tried 3 times with no success).

Glad to be shut of it. On the surface, they're lovely looking, luxurious cars, but honestly, they're absolute rubbish.
