Today I.....

Yes, it was an F-Pace.

I can't see the new facelift ones being any better to be honest and the list of issues with mine were very long. Apart from looking lovely (but this is subjective, I acknowledge) and handling pretty well for such a large car, the problems include:

very rattly engine (2.0 diesel) with no refinement and little power
very uncomfortable seats (despite them being the 10-way memory electric seats)
very cramped (more driving space in the A2, seriously)
not the best quality plastics
terrible software
unresponsive to button presses both on the console and the locking buttons on the door handles
auto tailgate never worked reliably (hit me more times than the spring-loaded one on Tank)
poor dealer backup
poor build quality
rusting discs all around (a common issue apparently)
rusting drive shafts (on a 3 year old car??)
poor fuel economy (low thirties per gallon for a 2.0 TDI is pathetic)
drinks adblu for fun

The final straw for me was that the car was a mongrel of 2017 and 2018 parts. Apparently very common to use parts between model years and it meant in my case that I could never have a tow bar fitted and coded in (and the dealer tried 3 times with no success).

Glad to be shut of it. On the surface, they're lovely looking, luxurious cars, but honestly, they're absolute rubbish.
Many of the things you mention I’ve heard from other people tbh. Sounds like you’re definitely better out of it!

You have been too spoilt by the delights of an A2 ??

Is there a knack to avoiding breaking them I wonder- save not using them?!

I hate to appear boasting as it may tempt fate, but in 16 years I'm still on the original! I always take out and replace the dip stick really really slowly trying to feel for any resistance. I do have my A2 serviced at an Audi independent and to my knowledge they have not broken it and replaced without saying so. They do have an A2 themselves. I am surprised though; plastic does get brittle with age. (my wife says I get brittle with age as well ;)

Where do you have the A2 serviced out of curiosity? My daughter lives not too far from Trowbridge so I might be able to combine a visit once lockdown is over.

Audi VW Centre Melksham, 25 Lysander Rd, Melksham, SN12 6SP 01225 707070 http://www.audivwcentremelksham.co.uk/

I've been using them for 10+ years. At the moment they have staff on furlough so there is a 3 week waiting time. Website says new customers get 10% off first service (must quote "NEW" and refer to offer on their website) See also the special offer page re cambelt etc change offer.

With thanks to @timmus , @Joga and @bono05 , disgustingly rough tool made up from 10mm thread / 17mm head bolt as per dimensions suggested. Worked a treat so thank you all.

Who would have thought having the right tool for the job would have made the job so much easier ... ?

What I hadn't appreciated was how much slot was available when looking from underneath, so must have got lucky before.

Will now order up the real thing.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Morning Steve,

I know these new items aren’t cheap but they do look like they’re worth every penny.

These new caps look fantastic. Making me reconsider refurbishing mine and just go for new when the time comes.

Kind regards,

Tom

@Jellybean I did consider doing just that. When I looked at the horizontal bars they are recessed back from the vertical ends. The resulting black gap did not appeal so did not bother. May take another look. The 3 bars stop short of the end of the fog panels and it is only the ribs on these panels that have had the strips applied to. Strips may be slightly too thick to fit securely to the horizontal bars also.

... Beaten by a sump plug.

Whover serviced it before had overtightened the thing. I'm not prepared to damage the thread and leave me stranded on the driveway so I've admitted defeat and will reluctantly let a professional service it....

This time.
