Had two calamities on Tonka, both within half an hour or one another.

The 1st;

I noticed in traffic Tonka was noisier than normal so when I pulled over I had a look underneath and found this.

I drove the 4 miles home. The noise (which I attributed to the exhaust crack) got appreciably louder in the last 1/4 mile and on pulling up I found this. The tyres are less than 1500 miles old 🤦 Unfortunately time precludes investigation or any remedy today however I’m now praying no 3rd A2 calamity befalls me.
Third calamity- dads 1.2 has had a hole chewed into its fuel tank 🙈

There’s a full stainless exhaust on this car and I’d say that’s a poor weld that needs taking back to the original fabricator for remedy.

The coilovers are Bilstein B12 from memory and are fully adjustable for camber too. Way more than the A2 needs 😊

The rears are still the original spring and shocks, albeit posh springs and shocks though aren't they?
Mac.

Sadly no idea who that was however I’ve a man who can who welded up the flexi section last year.

The welds look to have just been pooled from the tube(melting the 2 edges together) with no additional rod fed into it , leaving it prone to cracking although looking neat.
The spring definitely looks terminally damaged or it’s a tension spring , having had a similar failure when towing our caravan in our VW Tiguan.

Does the spring on the opposite side look so compressed as well?
Looks like the spring failure, which could explain the overload on 1 side and causing the tyre wall to prematurely wear out.

When I’m back with the car tomorrow I’ll take some pictures and revert. Comparing the two sides was going to be my 1st course action because when inspecting the exhaust (pre any issue with the tyre) and taking that photo I didn’t think the spring looked any different to normal.

Morning all,

Today I... Had an early start here at 2work Towers to warm up Project 250 prior to its MOT 08:00 this morning.

All went very well and happy to report this bargain A2 has now seen its second MOT in our ownership, both successful:

Hopefully the other driver here can make better use of it this year and achieve more than 5k miles.

Kind regards,

Tom

Today I got a phone call from Paul Irving IRVS VW Restorations. Broken down near us on A6 Carnforth in a very nice Porsche 356 he had driven up from London. Only wanted me to take a Spark Plug Socket to him. Did that then he needed it again about 6 miles further on at Heversham, so went there as well.

Today I (well yesterday now) have had my A2 for 19 years :) ... Happy Birthday A2!!

Just read your post from 5yrs ago, only another 9yrs to go

Happy Birthday A2!

Cenick, lots of niggles with my A2, like yearly water in the boot , but things I can live with. I drive my A2 every day, several times a day. Lucky to still have her on the road.
Happy motoring to you.
