Government is concerned about the amount of diesel being consumed by cars.... given a large proportion is imported.... given the concerns with Brexit..... or perhaps the military needs most of the diesel. ?? cannot see a 60 ton Chieftain tank rolling along on battery power??

The cars might be around but there will be inducements to make them difficult/expensive to use. Increased road fund, fuel duty and even insurance premiums. It will reach a stage where you'll feel guilty to be still using one! (and anti-social)

Yes..... seem to remember the anti 4*4 brigade.... kinda funny as some of the 4*4 where in fact more fuel efficient than some of the cars the complainers/campaigners drove around in??. Still, government will already have in place a strategy to reduce Diesel engines (particularly car users and not truck) and.... you are correct... they will insist insurance companies increase premiums.?????????. Glad my A2 will be for local use and therefore, only need filling up once/twice of even three monthly.

Which 4x4s are more efficient than which commuter car?

I had a Freelander.... that was more fuel efficient than many a car...... I also had an XC70 and that at times did well over 40mpg (if driving like daisy), many, many cars petrol and diesel would not achieve that... so not wishing to bump the op... propaganda is systematically fused into the media (by government) to make us all feel guilty..... and the population generally bite. I also had a discovery, well I towed a fuel bowser behind that??

And since you asked I also had:
1. Audi A4 tdi = worse than Volvo
2. I still have the Triumph Stag..... fuel is well, not good?
3. Mercedes E Class = worse than Volvo
4. Mercedes SLK = worse than Volvo
5. Porsche Boxster = worse than Freelander/Volvo
6. I still have Saab convertible = worse than Freelander/Volvo
7. Audi Allroad = worse than Freelander/Volvo

???????????

???? The A4 convertible was/is a very heavy car..... had it down to low 30s.... normal 40s.... driving like Miss Daisy 45..... and that was on 45 mile journeys. Just because it says TDI does not mean it sips like an A2????
 
Having said that.... the Volvo was down to 22 mpg at 128 mph ( in Germany). But hey, apologies to the op as we are certainly going off topic. Hope that does not raise your eyebrows ??

Just to clarify things - forgetting about Germany for a minute - what economy will the rest of your collection get in Fife? * if this is relevant?

In Fife, the Volvo would trounce many a 4x4 for economy. Indeed the Freelander did pretty well on its runs from Ayr to Aberdeen. If you read the posts, my collection was not owned all at once?. Merely stated a fact regards people jumping on the band wagon against diesel owners. It will happen again... why.... because they can?
 
The post is about future classics and not my experience with mpg, if you want to run a post on that please do.... but we are going off topic somewhat.?

I have two 1.4tdi A2s and am steadfastly in favour of both in my collection of 3 (largely because I have to fill them up at substantially less than half the rate I do my other half's 34L 1.4i every 2 weeks..).. any comments made in your earlier threads are liable to have been misread / misunderstood. All the best :)

Understood. I am not against diesel far from it as I have a diesel motorhome and a diesel peugeot van. My wife has had 7 VW golfs since 2000 and a Tiguan all TDIs. Bought the A2 1.4 CS last week and in a couple of weeks will have a 1.6 CS both blue. Would have a tdi but since I have a van, no need. Besides, six vehicles is all I have room for.

I did wonder if you had a stag with the JaveGreen user name
I also had a Java green stag mk2 for some 21 years
Loved it but is just got too expensive to pore petrol in in
