An OpenSky is reborn!

Lubrication Points?

Just read this thread and the associated PDF's but cannot see the recommended lubrication points nor recommended lubricant for the Open Sky. Can someone point me in the right direction please - thanks

I always recommend the silicone lubricant you can get from B&Q - it's meant for underground pipe seals and it brilliant stuff.

Comes in a little white bottle and you just squeeze out what you need, so no waste and no 'overspray' Make sure you clean the old stuff, with its accumulated grit and grime off first though, otherwise all you're doing is making a grinding paste that will kill the seals.

Cheers,

Mike

thanks Mike - Think I will go to B & Q on my own - everytime I go with my better half we come back with another plastic reindeer!!:)

Ha! Could be worse - I always have to inspect every kitchen display (or at least show interest) whenever we go!

Cheers,

Mike

Part vas 6010

A Happy new year to everyone. I have some very enlightening news for everyone to start 2010. I recently my visited my local Audi specialist AM Cars in Ilminster, Somerset. I told him that my open-sky wasn't working and the proprietor Rupert looked on this forum and read the various problems people are having and told him I wanted my roof fixed. He has a lot of connections within VAG UK and contacted Brian Bell the tools and equipment administrator. He was informed that the roof can be repaired by an Audi dealer instead of having a new one fitted. However the dealer has to have a VAS 6010 slide/tilt roof assembly device. This part will cost the dealer £1027 plus VAT and delivery. In my case AM cars were not prepared to purchase a part that he might only use once. I can understand that in the circumstabnces. It seems that you need to find an Audi dealer that has this part (if any) and they should be able to repair the roof. Also required is a repair kit, part number 8Z0 898 738 comprising of a set of cables and guides is £139.18 plus vat and there are 4 in stock in he UK.
Here are some PDF files.

If having the device to repair the roof means the repair is a DIY job, is this something the club members with broken Open sky may be interested in looking into?
If there are say more than 10 folk interested in buying the kit, and we could find an appropriate source to complete the repair, this may be a goer.
Thoughts?

mines gone too

may I add my name to the long list of people with brokensky!! Can anyone kindly tell me how to manually close it, I have it nearly but it wont go down on the left corner. Audi....please help us to sort this issue !!!

they won't help, it's a ten year old car and they're not interested.

I've added in the other thread the location of the key (clipped in to the switch bracket) and how to get it out (remove the light lens and then pull). It's also in your handbook!

If you've heard the electric engine turning but the OSS was not closing, you might have a worn out plastic gearing sprocket, or like in my case a broken closing wire (the OSS is pulled to open and close by 4 strings, 2 on each side).
You can find the closing crank clipped on top of the instrument cluster you remove to gain access to the electric engine and cranking location.
Now to the easy part of closing your OSS. This can be done fairly simple if you understand how the system works. Take a look at my previous posts on how i closed mine. If the front part is not yet lowered for you to close shut it's clamps, ask a friend to help you and each of you grab a side of the panel, and slide it as it would normally do. Better yet, ask a third one to crank the gearing mechanism as not to damage it further while you're pushing it.
Good luck.

Many thanks to Bret and Trex, I really appreciate your help. My car came without the handbook I'm afraid ! Now the roof is really messed up. The rear glass-panel is tighly wedged half-closed, its shut on one corner but open on the other. It's in really tight so I cant force it in case I smash the glass. is there a way to remove the motor and will that mean I can move the glass panels easier? I just want to get it closed at the moment as I do not have a garage...

I noticed that if the panel is miss-aligned being in one position on one part and in another on the other part, it's very hard to move it as it gets stuck. Once they're both aligned, if you apply equal force on both of the two sliding parts (enter the helpful buddy) it slides fine.
Try to see if you can first align the ends of the panel, be it closed or open, and after that try to close it again. Whatever you do, don't use sharp tools, you don't want to crack the whole thing, and apply a sensible amount of pressure.
My problems were with the first panel, because on one side the cable was intact and the motor would try to close it, but on the other it snapped, and there was nothing to pull it and the whole thing would get stuck. So with some help from me in guiding the broken part and the engine pulling the other, i managed to get it to retract so i could then clamp it shut. It's been a full half year since then and no water problems, but i'm still heartbroken...:(
Unfortunately the new job and weather keep me from opening the whole thing up and either fixing it or making it a full-time convertible.:)

I'm waiting on a call back from Peter Smith, service-manager at Audi Eastbourne. I dont see why Audi cannot loan out the repair jig from dealer to dealer in order to get these open skys working. If they won't do a recall then surely it's the least they can do. We customers would still be paying for the repair kits and labour plus vat so they are quids in anyway??!! I wouldnt mind paying for the repair but it would just be foolish to fork out a fifth of the cars value just to open the sunroof....even if I could afford it !!
:(

because they're not interested and it's "not worth it".

There is a dealer in Bad Tölz who has specialised in this stuff, but he is the only one I am aware of. All the (publically) available documentation is already on this site.

Hi All,

I too have some problems with OpenSky. It did not close fully, but opened OK and seems to be gliding freely etc.

I closed it manually with the hex-key using the instructions in the user manual. This improved the situation somewhat: When I now try to open it to the first position (lift just the back of the front panel up), nothing happens (although I can hear the motor run). However, when I press it again, the whole window opens normally. Also, when I close it, it closes it fully. Is it as if there is slack in the gears/cables somewhere?

Any ideas anyone where the problem lies, and can it be fixed?

Many thanks

If only we knew for certain... there are so many things that could go wrong and loads of repair kits, one more expensive than the other. :(
But fear not, cause when the weather is again going to be favorable temperature wise, i might just get those crazy DYI thoughts and pop the whole damn thing "make or break" style. I really miss that rooflessness freedom a working Opensky gives you.

Maybe the motor is now out of sync. You could try the reset procedure in this post - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showpost.php?p=31318&postcount=15

Cheers Spike
