An OpenSky is reborn!

Hi Guys,

I keep coming back to this thread as my OSS is not going to open with the noises it makes but after reading this very interesting thread I'm quickly realizing a trip to Germany is the best answer.
I'm in Kent which is a good starting point and mine is still under 10 years up to September so I'm going to give this great option some quick thinking in order to get mine hopefully sorted. Its 693 miles to Bad Tolz from here and I've always enjoyed a good drive!:)

Nigel

Hi Nigel,
the trp there is quite easily doable in a day from Kent, albeit potentially a rather long one if there are any probs (ended up taking me 20hours :( ).
It'd be a great trip at this time of year

scheduled !!

Hi all

Just want to inform that my closed sky repair is scheduled for april 15.
Have booked a hotel for a holiday of 3 nights and 4 days there with the wife and my two little daughters.
Actually, Bad tolz is a Spa. I am looking forward to it :D
It's 900km trip (Paris, Kehl, Bad Tölz)

my a2 turns 10 June 26. It's now or never.
It is an unexpected miracle.

The full service is going to be done by Rinner. The cost should be 450-500€. Finger crossed it won't be more.

By the way, could somebody tell me the services that I could avoid by doing them myself, like Washer Fluid, bulbs...etc

Thanks

Hi ariles

While your car is in for repair could you ask the guys about the best way to keep the Open Sky in good condition -
. The lubricants they use
. How to look after the seals etc.
. What to do with the cables and tracks (which are not really accessible)
. Any mods to do on a roof which is working ok to make it last longer
. Do they plan to offer an exchange service for failed roofs which over are 10 year old.

If you get chance, ask them to demonstrate the clean and lube procedure on your new roof.... so you can tell us all how to do it when you get back.

We all have our own ideas but it would be great if we could get some practical tips from the experts.

Cheers Spike

What a coincidence. I'm booked into Rinner on 13th and 14th of April, so just a day ahead of you, ariles.

Spike, I'll certainly take the list of questions along. I'm taking my camera too.

I'm really looking forward to the road trip. I'm in the North West, so it's a fair treck!

Tom.

I'll be in Frankfurt myself on the 10th (without my A2) and return on the 14th. Have fun :)

I think I can ask about the lube stuff. I have a couple of phone calls to Germany to make tomorrow anyway, so I think I can add this one.

I should have got more info/pics, sorry :(

ariles, there isn't really anything you can do to lower the cost :(
For example, I got charged for washer fluid despit having 4 litres with me and got charged for new tire foam despite having a spare wheel...
Having said that the bill was 482 when they'd quoted 500 and more work was done than suggested when they gave that quote, such as a brake fluid change.

Maybe they take advantage knowing we have no option, maybe they don't - one of the German forum members didn't need to have a service there because his last service was at Audi - but when I played with the figures, juggled them, looked at them from all angles, shone a light in their eyes while dripping water on their forehead I concluded that it was good value for money for the following reasons;

1/. The same service work at my local Audi dealership would have cost £120+ more....and I wouldn't have got a new OSS.

2/. If they had just repaired the roof it would have cost a similar amount and I wouldn't have had the service.

3/. I got a weeks holiday to Bavaria taking in Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium (could have done without that though but that's another story...), a full service and a new OSS for less than the cost of just the OSS frame in the UK - that's just the part, never mind the fitting...

4/. I ultimately just viewed it as the cost of the fix, 'We can fix your broken OSS for 500 euros'. I f someone put it that simply you'd be quite happy with the deal ;)

Now, what will they do when all A2s are 10+ years old and there new OSS laying around unfitted?

timmus; I'll wave on your way down to the ferry :)

I'd be intrigued to compare roofs after the event.

Lube

@spike : I will also ask about lube and open sky care but I don't think I'll take pics because with two babies I couldn't stay there on day long. I'll see. Maybe... Depends on the wife and the children.
I also going to ask about 10+ a2.

Also, I don't speak English as well as I write it ( Google Translate helps sometimes on the web but it is not going to be there in real life  ). I still don't worry very much about it.
I also studied German during 6 years but my level is USELESS. I know, it's a shame  . An iPhone dictionary app is going to be necessary for the journey.

@timmus : maybe we'll see there. I' ll be looking at a2 English plate carefully.
My a2 is "blue perl effect" and has a French plate.
Why do they need 2 days for your car? They told me that one day is enough for mine.

@nuttinnew : I agree with you, it's a good deal. The trip worth it. Plus the holiday with tHe family in such a beautiful country as Bavaria.
I'll give the babies the first swim bath(ten months old).
Plus if intend to sell my a2, Nothing will lower the it's price.

Hi ariles
I was thinking the best time to ask would be when you collect the car. If they are not too busy and the language barrier is not a problem they may demonstrate how and where the lube is applied......just have your camera ready.
Another option is to prepare a list of questions from the A2oc and leave it with them. They may scribble some comments which we can build on as other people have their roofs fixed.
The goal is to end up with a definitive 'how to' guide on Open Sky

Cheers Spike

When i picked my car up in front of the dealership after having the roof fixed, they offered me to have a technician come and show me how it works.:) I guess this is the best time to ask them about the lubing involved.
They offer a 2 year warranty for the whole job, so you can stay worry free for that period.
And just to comment on the servicing involved in order to get the free repair, they know it's our only viable option, and as i mentioned before it is better to keep it simple (avoid having it done twice as myself) and just have it done there. Just think that for 500E, you get a working roof and a full service, which is not that bad...

I've just found the number Rinner gave me for 'Special Lubricant for Sliding/Tilting Roof; G 000 450 02'

I'll price it up tomorrow :)

Mine does seem a bit 'poppy' every opening, even the rear of the first pane, I may have to make cleaning & lubing a monthly thing.

Why do they need 2 days for your car? They told me that one day is enough for mine.

They're due to work on my car on the first of the two days. I booked myself in for a second day just so that, should anything not go to plan, I've still got some flexibility. I'm driving over 1600km to get to Rinner. If they found they'd need to order a component or two as part of the service, I need to be able to get the job done and still get back to the ferry. It's just a precaution.

Cheers,

Tom

Well done

That is a good idea!
I asked them( Mr Rinner himself) to confirm me that one day will be enough, they said yes.
I hope so. If no, I am still there until sunday.

Don't make it too long because i am scheduled for a service and roof-repair the 14th as well and i hope to leave the place in the evening :)

We should be negotiating a UK Forum Group Discount with them if this volume of UK NOSS's keep heading to Germany!

I agree with above!
Woohoo!!! Just received confirmation that my car qualifies for the repair. However can only get me in in May. Warranty runs out 30th April! :(
Anyone willing to swap a slot in April?

Check and get the answer in writing but it should be ok since the car was booked in before the warranty deadline.

Wow! Rinner have found themselves suddenly inundated with OSS repairs for A2s from all over Europe. I hope they're enjoying the custom, even if Audi HQ aren't! :)

Brutus, I'm not 100% but I think you'll be ok because it's been agreed while still in warranty. They've said you qualify and I presume that's in writing/email but it's worth getting them to clearly state it.

Also, on page 10 of my service book 'General notes; service work required - normal service service operations' it states 'sunroof guide rails cleaned and sprayed with lubricant'. I wonder if there's a tickbox on the service check sheet for this to prove it's been done (thinking past history)...
