ATL clutch & DMF replacement parts

Resurrecting this thread as I might go to a 90 as an option if my trusty A2 cannot be rectified. Some I've been looking at have not had a DMF but are at that mileage point or overdue and my take on this engine is a DMF replacement will be an inevitable item of maintenance in which case I have to factor that into any purchase price.

Unless it has been done recently it will be a preventative maintenance expense especially as my wife will do a lot of short stop/start trips in it which is never good.

So, noting the LUK manufacture these really are in scarce supply and when you can find one they're £400+ sans release bearing and overseas (eBay seller in Italy!) with the associated import duty (thanks Brexit!).

Have things changed since this last thread update in terms of sourcing?

In a word - no. £400 or less is a REALLY good price, I just set up a watch filter on eBay and snapped a kit up at £380 delivered even though I don’t need one yet at 165k miles (probably just under halfway through the current - replacement - DMF’s lifespan.

There are some who have experimented with a single mass flywheel (SMF) conversion; however I understand the results are not always 100%.

The last person I know who got one was @Cenick. He told me he saw some in Italy for about £480 ish plus importing...
You may get someone parting with a spare if you place a wanted add ut expect to pay £400plus..

It's such a shame this situation, one of the reasons I sold my 90 really.

I got my one from Arnold Clark if that helps - they might have others?

EDIT - They do at £465-ish!
Many thanks and worth knowing as they must also fit other cars with the same engine? Out of interest what mileage did you change it at? With one that is virgo intacto with a slight depression of the clutch is NIL vibration or a very slight amount comensurate with the engine vibration?

According to THIS SOURCE, the 90 engine (ATL) was fitted to some VW Polos as well as the A2 TDI90, but I don’t think many were made of either model, which is why this kit is hard to source now.

@Dave M changed the DMF on my car for a new kit when he owned it at (I believe) around 110k miles. This seems to be the typical lifespan - a mechanically sympathetic driver can get up to around 140k miles from one, from what I’ve read on here (I’m sure someone even got to 150k before their’s finally wore out).

I don’t quite follow the final question I’m afraid. Perhaps autocorrect has crept in unintentionally?

Good call, I'm not sure either. My query was around the vibration with a DMF that has no issues ie if you've just put in a brand new one is there any vibration (however slight) that comes through the clutch pedal with your foot resting on it or slightly depressed? From memory you don't notice any on a 75 even though a 3 cylinder diesel is hardly the smoothest engine. I'm trying to gauage how I would know that I need to replace it other than the obvious engine vibration and associated noises.

I don't think a bit of vibration through the clutch pedal when lightly resting foot on it is a reliable indicator of DMF wear. I've driven various audi's with DMF's for 35 years and often noticed this slight clutch pedal vibration. Most of these cars have done a further 100k miles without the DMF becoming an issue.

Signs you would look for to indicate a slowly failing DMF would include: Rattling on start up (first sign); rattling at tickover in neutral with clutch up which quietens with clutch down; knocking when applying too much power in too low a gear (properly goosed).
