Check your front suspension arms people

I wouldn’t worry too much about the catastrophic failure, modern manufacturing eliminates that kind of issue (although a few hammer whacks by an ill trained mechanic will do them no good!)

As mentioned earlier in this thread, the thing that will strike you is the increased road noise, would travels easier through an inflexible solid object than it does through the pressed ones

The diesel with pressed ones is like a lawnmower compared to the petrol with cast iron. So noise I do not worry about. Guess wheeldimensions are more critical for noise

Surely the correct bushes are critical to the noise transmission rather than cast versus pressed lower arms?

Agreed - I never noticed any difference in noise when I swapped from pressed to cast.

Simon.

I thought it sounded like a wheel bearing had went until I got used to it. A wheel bearing has not gone! Maybe the ditch finder tyres hadn’t helped!

I can confirm the cast arms are far nosier than the pressed steel arms but only on a particular road surface. Many roads in North Yorks are covered in coarse blue chips that are glued with tar. The surface is horrible and coarse and the resulting vibration can be both felt and heard. I have had the car sawing from left to right trying to identify which bearing has failed but it just the road surface all along.

Conversely on a smooth motorway the cast arms are quieter and feel more reassuring (could be due to new rubbers).

So it can be really changed from/to cast arms to/from pressed armas on 1.4 TDI (75) 2001 ?

Maybe somebody did it?

I changed pressed to cast on my 75 TDi. Having no end of trouble and noisy too on anything other than supper smooth roads.

As posted earlier, I changed pressed to cast on my 75 TDi without problem. Haven't noticed any increase in noise but it was a bit noisy anyway since having uprated suspension, something I now regret, though it rolls less on the bends.

We changed the arms on my sons 1.4i at the weekend, went from pressed to Meyle cast and absolutely no difference in noise at all.

The old ones where knackered.

The new cast jobbies are much better IMO.

any chance of some rough drawings with measurements of the various parts.
I'm sure I can knock one of these up in a few hours on my little Boxford lathe, and then make it available to club members. It seems a lot of money to spend on a tool which is likely to be used once and then sit in a tool box for ever and a day

I got the OSS track the other day - thank you. All fitted and the roof is fully assembled and working perfectly

Cheers,
Paul

Can do, or I could simply loan the tool out. It’s a pretty sturdy piece of kit but easy to knock up on a lathe.
Either option works for me
Some people do not like loaning tools, if you do then I would suggest a deposit which is return on sending the tool back

Cheers,
Paul

I’ll measure it and produce a CAD drawing to see how much you can make it for. It’s very heavy so the postage would be expensive.

Is it the same (in terms of function, if not quality) as one of these?:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Front-Su... and the Laser one for price/quality.[/QUOTE].[/QUOTE

That looks identical and an excellent price
