Edinburgh Low Emissions zone

All petrol A2s exhaust emissions meet the EU4 standard but that doesn't necessarily mean that yours will be treated as EU4. As far as the DVLA are concerned my 2001 1.2Tdi is EU3, even though the emissions meet the EU4 standard. In France, any Crit'Air sticker that you apply for will be determined by the year of first registration because the EU classification is not on the V5 and the exhaust emission values are ignored. The Germans do things more intelligently; if your V5 shows the required values, you'll get a green plakette.

My 2004 (04) FSI does not have it's Euro class on the V5, nor, as far as I know, anywhere else.
The emission data, on the V5, indicates it meets Euro 4.
If you contact Audi, they will send you a Certificate of Conformance, and a letter confirming (for 1.4 and 1.6 petrol A2s) they meet Euro 4. This is free.
Because Euro status was not mandatory until 2005/06, cars built before that didn't have Euro 4 on there CoC, so not on V5 either.
Once you have the CoC and letter from Audi, you can send your V5, along with the Audi paperwork, to DVLA, who will send a new V5, including the Euro class, and update their database.
To the best of my knowledge, all petrol A2s meet Euro 4.

HJave you checked the build plate under the passenger carpet?

Hi @A2Steve
No, not checked there, but I have Audi's confirmation letter, so I'm OK.

To avoid charges, you need the, "bumf" so with more of these ULEZ springing up, best get your V5 updated.
Audi will email you pdf copies of the CoC and letter within a couple of days, so it's easy enough. (DVLA are a bit slower).
They need your VIN.

Thanks all for your contributions. I've just sold my 1.4 SE to my dad and while I don't expect he'll be driving into London, I would like to get this sorted out for him.

Could you tell me what address I need to send the car's chassis number to? Is it:

Mick Jackson Homologation Specialist Vehicle Compliance Department Volkswagen Group UK Ltd

What's the postcode and rest of the address, please?

Thanks in advance.

The problem is that if the option codes for your car shows EU3, that's what DVLA will treat it as, despite it meeting EU4 emission standards. Someone with such a car should put this to the test; get fined and then prove that your car meets the required standards! I would have done so but an A2 1.2Tdi is not much use for this purpose in the UK. Otherwise it's a case of early adopters of clean technology being (illegally?) penalised by the DVLA.

Sorry, @RAB for not being clearer.

I was after the Audi / VAG address to get them to send me a letter back, which I then planned to send with the V5 to DVLA.

Does anyone on this thread have that?

Just email them, address above. However, if your option codes sticker shows EU3, don't bother. If it shows EU4, there's no need to contact them. There's no chance of your car being "upgraded" to EU4, despite it meeting EU4 emissions. The Germans don't penalise early adopters of clean technology - it was then!

I may, of course, be wrong, but as I understand it, the A2s (and many others) were not classified, because Euro 4, although introduced in January 2005, did not become mandatory 'till January 2006. This is why there is no Euro classification on the Audi CoC.
To correct this, Audi include a letter confirming its Euro classification. DVLA accept this, and will issue a new V5, which will include the Euro classification.
These bits of paper are the only valid means of proving your car's Euro class.
So, get your email off to

You're wrong Mac! DVLA and Audi have confirmed in writing that my 1.2Tdi is classified as EU3. In 2001, when it was built, EU4 did not exist, so EU3 it is. However, exactly the same car, produced in 2003, would have been EU4. I have a green plakette (EU4) for the same car in Germany. You are, perhaps, confusing the above with a possible requirement to explicitly state the EU classification on the CoC. Early adopters of cleaner technology are penalised in the UK. In France, it's even worse! Our 1999 Lupo 3L is officially EU3, meets the EU4 emission standard but would only get a Crit'Air sticker in France that equates to EU2! That's because the EU standard is not on the V5 (for whatever reason), the emission values are ignored and in the absence of the EU classification, what you get is determined by the year of registration! In Germany, it would receive a green plakette! Having failed to get DVLA to place any EU classification on my V5s, it's time to try to get some sense from my Brexit party MP! Some hope!

I said "These bits of paper (CoC & letter) are the only valid means of proving your car's Euro class"
I think that's exactly what you are saying too ...

My 2004 FSI was built before Euro 4 existed, but is still classified by Audi as Euro 4.

I've sent an email to the email address further up the thread. I'll report back here with the results. And again once it's been sent to DVLA along with the change of owner.

No, that's not what I am saying because there is no EU standard on any of my CoCs. A letter won't prove anything other than what you have on your car's option sticker. What was incorrect was the first line in #14. Your FSi was built to meet EU4 because Audi knew what was coming, otherwise there would be a cut-off date, after which they would not be able to sell their cars! That's the reason why the BHC replaced the AMF.

Just out of interest, according to AA website:

Euro 4 emission limits (petrol)

  • CO – 1.0 g/km
  • HC – 0.10 g/km
  • NOx – 0.08
  • PM – no limit
FSi according to my V5:

CO 0.148
HC 0.058
NOx 0.014

Euro Status (on my log-book): blank.

Therefore, FSi's (as @PlasticMac says) easily meet E4 requirements and on this V5 at least, haven't yet been allocated a Euro status. Will also try the above, so thank you for the info ? Currently TFL says I'd have to pay the ULEZ charge assuming someone had dragged my country bumkin behind into the big smoke in the first place.

The letter I received from Audi, along with the CoC, says:

05 March 2021
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
MODEL Audi A2
CHASSIS NUMBER WAUZZZ8Z75N000640
I hereby declare that the vehicle with the above Chassis Number
meets EU4 compliance.
Yours Sincerely
Mick Jackson
Homologation Specialist
Vehicle Compliance Department
Volkswagen Group UK Ltd.

Seems pretty clear to me.
Can't see why any other FSI (or 1.4 Petrol) would not get a similar letter.
I agree with @RAB he should get a similar letter, with his CoC, if the 1.2 emissions are within the appropriate band.
Contact Mick Jackson
and ask why not.
Mac
