Flasher unit DIY repair (part 8Z0 941 509 B)

Good point, thanks. I'm pretty sure I've seen that in the handbook. Even one journey to work with no stereo will be hard to endure so I'll make sure I dig it out at lunchtime.

Cheers.

New flasher unit installed and working. As someone else with the double DIN stereo mentioned, it's screwed into a holder behind the climate unit and seems to face the other way to everyone else's. Mine had a connector on both ends as I have the factory towbar.

Interestingly, although I had the stereo out for half the day, it didn't need the code when I reconnected it, and all the presets and other settings were still there.

It seems like such a luxury to have working indicators again after driving for a few days having to try and flash them manually!

My relay recently went capput so i ordered a new one from VagParts ,
i took out my double din Symphony 1
and could'nt see the relay ...So i then set about removing
the climate unit which seemed a real pig to get out
i was worried about breaking it eventually with much pushing
and pulling it came out and i think you can say this unit is
bullet proof so dont be afraid to give it a fair bit of teddy to get it out .....

After removing the climate control unit i still struggled to see the relay
so then removed the ashtray after removing everything i could finally
see what i was looking for .....

Used this moment as a good opportunity to fit The Audi ipod adapter
which is now fully functional thanks to a some late night phone calls to Mike ....

I am so glad I found this thread as I've had all the symptoms over the last few days - hazards are fine but indicators give one flash and that's it...sometimes they work ok and I thought it was something to do with the cancelling mechanism on the steering....

Many thanks
Ian

slow, slow, quick, quick, stop....

There goes the relay, ordered a new one from Audi £25.23 inc vat.

Just need to remove the items in this very good thread and all should be ok again.

indicator relay

This site is a godsend, I've just been getting these symptoms on the way home. The hazards work fine though. I'll get a new relay tomorrow. A bit worried about the stereo removal tho as I have the double size one and I know how much of a hassle it is to get out.

cheers all.

As long as you have 4 removal keys, taking out a double DIN radio is a doddle and in fact, it'll make changing the relay easier, as you'll have far more room to work in.

Cheers,

Mike

well i have finaly got arround to fitting my flasher unit after 2 weeks of "will it flash? " i'm lucky my car hasn't got a swear box as getting the old unit out was a fun game i'd rather not play!! then came "how the hell am i going to fit the new one?" i slid it into the mount but it refused to lock into place---plus every time i let it go it flew off down into the belly of the car. so after donating some blood i chamfered the end of the flasher unit and it popped in then put the connector back on and tried it---YES IT WORKS so tomorrow i will change my dension cradle to the fly lead type (while i have the centre console in bits)as it is more suited to my install and put the trim back on. job done.

PS my car has single din and non aircon so access is through the cubby hole so good luck to all who have this job to do---just dont think it is a five min job. have fun mike

Ouch.. thanks everyone so far for this very useful thread, I've got as far as removing the connector from the back of the unit itself, but for the life of me I really can't get the thing out. I can see the metal clips on the top and bottom of the unit, but can't get them off. Any tips would be appreciated as my hands can't take much more, as they are currently cut to shreds.:(

Thanks for your time.

Useful thread, thanks all. Just used this info to fix our '53 FSi Sport, we've been putting up with manual indicators way too long. I used a maplin relay, part JM67X (cost £1.30).
I first unsoldered the offending relay than fitted the new one with stranded wires of 20mm (length not csa!) soldered onto the new relay. The new relay then had the terminals insulated, it's small enough to be fitted within the free space in the original housing.
Time to fix the reverse switch now!

wish me luck!

I'm a girl, so car things don't come easily to me! But I do know I would like to save some money - especially with a cambelt and 4 tyres to pay for soon too! Sooooo I have bought the part from Audi - £25.20 and am going to attempt to fit it. I also have the symphony 2 stereo, so I'm hoping it won't be much harder as at the moment I cannot even think how to start taking it apart! But this thread is great and has given me some confidence! I'll let you know how it goes!!!!

Good luck Destinystar 123! I haven't had to do this (yet!) but I am sure if you take your time and have enough light on the subject it should be fine.

Cheers,

David

PS Love the colour of your A2, always liked that shade of blue, esp on A2's and TT's

Hi Destinystar123
Removing the radio is fairly easy providing you have the special keys. Alternatively you could ask your local Audi dealer if they would do this for you. If they just pull the radio out 1 or 2 cm you can finish the job off at home. (I always put masking tape around the dash opening and use an old towel to support the radio and protect the centre console while unplugging it. The following pics may help

Cheers Spike

I don't have the keys so I'm a bit worried about that! I've had to get someone to pick up the part for me and it's tricky for me to get to an Audi dealer through the week. Hmmmm, is it impossible/stupid to try to take it out without the keys? Is there any way you can get it out without the keys?

Thanks birdsd01 - I've always loved the colour, although I'd love a colour storm in any colour!

Thanks for everyones help! You guys really are great!

Don't try to remove the radio with anything other than the proper keys as you will at best damage the fascia and at worst, break something.

It is possible to get to the flashed relay by removing the ashtray (2 screws) and then removing the storage tray and climate panel (if you've a non-Symphony system)

Cheers

Mike

ok, thanks for the info, looks like Halfords sell a selection so might pop down there tonight to see if I can get the keys! Am I looking for a specific key? I've seen some online that look like the ones posted above.

One of the rare good thing with Halford being a conventional shop is that you can buy it, try it before leaving their car park :) Change for a correct set or refund at worst.

So I went to Halfords at the weekend......didn't go quite to plan! They found the right keys, but only had 2, they decided for some reason that 2 would be ok. So now I have 2 keys stuck in my stereo :(
Oh dear!

Never ceases to amaze me, how daft Helfrauds employees can be.

There's 4 slots in your radio, so why would 2 keys do? I once couldn't help myself when I saw 2 of their staff tugging away at a Golfs window winders - they were trying to remove them so that they could take the door card off and fit new speakers.

The force they were using was in danger of braking the handles clean off, so I asked if they were having a little trouble. 'Oh, no. The plastic has just jammed that's all!'

I went over to the car, squeezed the sides of the winder with a thumb and forefinger and they slid off.

I then walked away leaving a bemused pair of spanner monkeys behind me!

Priceless.

Cheers,

Mike

I've been to a different Halfords since (my local store) where they audio guy (who was excellent) told me I had been sold completely the wrong keys and the only way to get them out would be brute force (the catches on the keys are stuck just under the plastic facia and will rip this off if pulled). Obviously he didn't want to break my stereo so I'm left with the 2 keys in there and am awaiting a call back from the original Halfords manager with a suitable solution!! Arghhhhhhh
