Is Stealth worth it?

Has any of the remaps that people have done affected the fuel economy, I know it depends on how you drive.... bla bla bla but compared to before remap, driving in a similar manner?

Considering having it done but cant sacrifice fuel economy when driving sensibly.

Many Thanks in advance Boyd

Our car was remapped at stealth a few weeks ago. On a mixture of long runs, the usual commute by my Mrs. and some (ahem) spirited driving by myself when I get the chance, the average MPG on the computer is reading an overall increase of 1 mpg.

So I'd reckon if you drive conservatively most of the time you will net a higher increase than this.

Had mine done 3+ years now and to start with your fuel consumption will be alot higher as can't help but apply your right foot a bit more than normal, this will wear off(well may do lol) but i'm getting about the same as i was before and now i'm running bigger wheels too. But as posted before its worth every penny!!!!!;). The other thing to remember is that it smooths out the power curve so makes it alot better to drive and you've always got the power there when you need it (plus a bit more)

Stealth remapped my car and, for all that I love the extra power and torque, I've found that my efficiency has gone up marginally because I mostly drive it just as I did before.

If I understand it correct the A2 1.4TDI's with 75bhp is very common engine while the 90bhp not many ppl have since it's more odd and special edition.
But I havent so far read about anybody remapping their 90bhp A2. Some one mentioned clutch wear a few other possible issues can occur.
To what I can read out from this forum is that ppl dont remapp their 90bhp A2 cause it is plenty enough at factory status.
Im curious tho, same as for the 75bhp one should be able to do the same with the 90bhp but not to gain speed & acceleration but to look for a better rpm curve so one has a better register to work off & not the short one you have today. I know that generally you gain a better eco drive by remapping a diesel today. I would like to find out if there is a remapp for my 90bhp A2 so I get a great rpm curve to work from in the sense to gaina better eco ride ie better mpg/l/km?
Any one knows a company that does this without being blind to only gain power and cause issues cause im not out for that?
Is it worth it?
I live in sweden so driving to UK for a remap is out if the question.
The roads in sweden have much greater elivations than the flat roads of europe so my A2 takes a lot of toll on this lower the mpg so it doesnt seem to be as fuel efficient as to what same type of car that spends it times on straight roads.
Could some one give me some feedback?

Hi Maso
The 90PS motor was introduced in the later part of the A2s short life span, from I think 2004, so there are just less of them around than the 75PS motor. It uses a variable vane geometry turbo to produce more torque and power.

There are quite a few people who have remapped the 90, it responds very well to it in fact, 120PS is achievable, as is more torque than the clutch/flywheel assembly can reliably cope with long-term (so care is needed from the mapper)!

The nicest thing about the remap is how it generates a much more useable torque curve - you get more lower down and it stays flat for much longer at the top end, so for the kind of roads you describe you can use the extra torque for a much smoother drive.

I can't comment on places outside UK for remapping but I'm sure you will have a reputable specialist who knows VAG cars. The 'rolling road' set up which tailors the map to your specific car rather than a standard or preset remap for the engine is favoured for obvious reason.

I have a 90 which is recently remapped. It was 95.6 bhp from the factory and 119 bhp now.

The car was quite sprightly as standard, but the torque between 2000 and 3000rpm is now fantastic. You need to be careful to keep the tyres from losing traction till you reach 3rd gear.

I read lots of information on remapping a 90BHP A2 in the 3.5 years it took me to get round to it; and was advised by Vince at Stealth who knows the car very well. Vince was careful to ensure the map curve stayed within any safety tolerances for the turbo as well, so this minimises the risk of additional wear and tear or damage.

Yes, there is a risk of turbo problems with the 90 pre and post remap; yes a remap will show up a worn clutch, but I was happy to take the risk and so far (2004 car with 83k miles) we have had no problems with the car outside of routine consumables.

With that history, if something does go wrong now then its no harm to it.

The roads in Scotland are a fairly mixed bag with plenty twists and elevations as you describe and when driving the same routes before and after the transformation in the A2 Tdi 90 is impressive; the car pulls like a train.

Its never going to be a fast car - but its amazing fun; and with a remap this is just amplified. I'd highly recommend it.

Cheers for the info. Does give me a positive after taste and a urge to do some seraching for remaps here in sweden.

Thank you for this very through info. Like i said i am never to look to make it faster but to make it more efficient. Now you really made me wanna look into this and see what i can find here in sweden for my A2 as a suited upgrade. I will ask for a rolling road test with the remap to make sure to get it perfectly tuned for my specific engine.

I just called Stealth and was quoted £270 for a TDi75 remap, plus £210 for cruise control (inc VAT). I mentioned the A2OC but this sounds like the non-discounted remap price based on earlier postings - perhaps they've increased their prices? Thoughts?

John

That's the discounted price, can't remember whether it was inc vat or ex vat. Keep in mind everyone mentioning 270 here would have got the discount.
