Need new windscreen. Any pitfalls?

Yes it is the wiper arm, it taps on the screen and chips it. The screen is structural, a crack forms at the chip then runs across and up the screen. The crack becomes noticeable months after the chip but can happen faster in winter.
Lost two screens to MOT testers, one to a flyer poster and one to a speed bump. The fix is to keep the arm joints in good order and when the Audi rubber screen protector buffer drops off, it doesn’t last long, tie on a 9v battery terminal protector cap with strong fishing line.
I can get a picture if that helps. .
My fix was to give the wiper arm a bit of a tweak, it always worked. As they say in the aircraft business, " a miss is as good as a mile".

I will add that the first sign of the problem is as the arm and blade deflect over time the rivet starts to abrade on the glass and squeak when the wipers are in use. That's how I found the problem.

Please excuse my ignorance, does the wee plastic box that covers the rivets part stop the screen from getting scratched? Thanks

Unfortunately not the plastic box fits on the upper surface. Has 2 functions, it finishes off the look of the wiper and protects the rivets / bushes from exposure to water. The lower surface is still open.
Best solution to protect the screen is a good wiper arm. Adding blobs of silicone or fixing other mechanical buffers to the lower ends of the rivets / springs although will not stop the arm drooping into the screen will at least provide a shock absorber to hopefully prevent the screen scratching or worse cracking.
Belt and braces I have a good arm fitted with additional blobs of black silicon rubber covering in the lower springs and protruding down a further 6mm.

Thank you very much for your detailed reply audifan, most helpful. Appreciated.

Got autoglass coming today. Been reading some of these threads but being a bit thick / paranoid - is the old wiper missing a plastic bit, or is this what it is supposed to look like from the underside? I have a new wiper to put on but no extra bits. Would hate to get the new screen and instantly trash it ?

Originally the small hole next to the lower pivot in your picture would have had a rubber nipple
Its present in photo on post #25

The risk without it is should the wiper arm be allowed to impact the windscreen when swapping a wiper for example there is increased risk of chip amd thereafter cracking

Replacement push fit rubber bumpers are available. Here's an example. Just measure hole size and metal thickness:

We should all have a spare in the glove compartment.
Mac.

Thanks Mac. Could you give the part number of the grommet I should have in the glove compartment of both my A2s? I've recently got the depronman reconditioned second generation wipers (one installed, one waiting for a group of jobs to be done on the FSI).

If someone can give me the size of the hole it fits into, I’ll do the rest. Mine is still intact, so don't want to take it out, 'cos it'll break!

I would be interested in these and if they come in at a reasonable cost. I’ve been asked for them in the past and would include one one a refurbished wiper arm

If a bulk buy is not running into mega money then I would consider buying say 200 or whatever the economic batch way is

Just looked at mine again, and... I don't have a bump stop.
(The white stuff is dry grease).
I'll still identify the appropriate size for those that do.
I feel disadvantaged now!

Measured the hole diameter, and it's approx 2.8 mm (my Lidl vernier is not good under about 5mm) and the panel thickness is 2mm.
It seems that the minimum hole size that available as stock is 3.5mm. Couldn't find anything smaller.
Sinclair & Rush will consider a custom run for 100 plus.
Could open up the hole, but that would bring corrosion problems.
Any thoughts @depronman and @jaffa_jim ?
Stick on is the other option, but it's a pretty aggressive environment in the cold and wet, when it;s not very hot of course.
Mac.
Update: I've sent an enquiry to S&R regarding a custom part, so will let you know when I do.
