Project Annie - Making an A2 Sicily Proof

Just when you think your car doesn't hold any more surprises. I am currently sitting in the car as my Mrs Gangitana86 is in the supermarket. I start fiddling with the lumbar switch of my seat - which has never worked in the almost four years I've had the car - and guess what, it starts working again.
 
Must just have been a connection issue, it's really simple just 12v and ground.
I remember you suggesting to remove the switch cover and have a fiddle or that maybe the cover was on the wrong way round. I tried that during the summer, no luck.

I have to admit, I have been looking at other cars on Autotrader recently :( Maybe she is trying her best now, who knows.

On another note, she is also in for a more intrusive operation as I have finally sourced a V68 flap motor, a nice little project to sort out the tropical mode which has returned, unfortunately.

Look forward to another guide on the flaps removal and refit, I've found it early hard to get in there and remove it. My temp flap is on its last legs

It's like the driver's side mirror. Moves up and down but not sideways. After not having used the car for several weeks during the first lockdown, all of a sudden, it moves from left to right. And as you can imagine, it worked for a number of days and then, boom, stopped working again.

So, where do I start... This weekend has been crazy. When I came back from Manchester on Friday evening my brake switch stopped working again. I fiddled with it on a motor services car park in the dark and finally got it working again. Yesterday, I decided the fit the new switch which will hopefully resolve the issue.

But then, things got better. I managed to remove the hand brake tray and take the 12v socket in under two minutes... I guess that must be a record somehow. My previous attempts took hours and lead to either a seriously deformed one or on one occasion even a completely broken one. Not sure what I did, but it worked.

Then, today, the moment had finally arrived to fix the V68 flap issue a.k.a. tropical mode in my car. I sourced a genuine VAG flap for £99.99 and decided to have a go myself. Glovebox out, a little fiddling (thank God I have small hands :)) and bam, all working again as it should. I will do a proper write-up with pictures and a video. All I can say is that it is doable, even by someone with very limited skills/expertise in these things. Hopefully, it keeps working, and I would be more than happy to assist anyone looking to fix this problem.

As promised, a how-to guide to remove a faulty V68 flap without having to dismantle the whole dash:

- first, remove the A pillar bottom trim. It doesn't need to be removed as long as the top bit is loose so you can access the glovebox screw closest to the passenger door, but I recommend you remove it in order to avoid any damage to the trim.

- remove the glovebox, five screws in total. The three middle ones are quite tricky if you are using a regular screwdriver as the glovebox door sits in the way. All of them are T25 if I'm not mistaken.

- Disconnect the glovebox light switch and out comes the box.

- You then need to remove the plastic air duct, one T25 screw and one Phillips screw. It's quite tight but the duct should come out easily.

- Remover the blue connectors from both the V107 and V68 motors

- Undo the two clips and pull the bracket with both motors out.

- Put the new motor in and ideally, make sure that the new motor is the lowest position. I know there is a specialist VAG tool out there, but just connect both motors again, turn on the ignition and put the aircon on the LOW setting. You will see the gear wheel move.

- Now comes the trickiest bit: aligning the gear wheel and the lever. Only the latter can be moved by hand, but if the gear wheel is in the position as mentioned above, it should not be too difficult to properly align it with the lever.

- Put the bracket back and plug both connectors back in. Turn on the engine and check whether the aircon is properly working. In my case, as the car was suffering from a blocked flap positioning motor, I knew that as soon as cold air was coming out with the aircon on LOW, I had fixed the issue. Changing the temperature on the aircon panel changed the temperature coming out of the vents.

- I would suggest letting the engine run for a bit and adjusting the temperature to make sure everything works as it should. If you have a colour DIS or VCDS, you should be able to clear to fault code now - and it shouldn't come back.

- Put the glove box back and finally the lower A pillar trim.

All in all, it took me about an hour to do this.

Thank you for this great write up. This will be invaluable to many including me.

Only last night I was in Project 250 which supplied us a rather warm and unpleasant journey home with the heating stuck on full. Tried all the usual tricks of temperature up and down a few times but didn’t work.

Fortunately is helped dry our clothes out after we being at the Snow Dome in Tamworth for a few hours.

Can you get at the connections in the mirror, to find out if it's the mirror or the control "joy stick" at fault (or the wiring twixt the two)?

This is the position of the V68 flap positioning motor gear wheel before I put it back together.
Thank you for showing this, seems easy enough, just the re-aligning of cogs the tricky bit, any elaboration on this would be ideal as still quite to see how they go back toether. *Where did you get the new motor from in the end by the way?

Either the alignment is easy to do, or I was very very very lucky :) I bought mine from eBay for just under £100 - for a genuine part. Actually, the new part was made in Spain whereas my old one was from Malaysia.
 
And then there was light .... Behold:


This was not on my to do list, heck I didn't even know my A2 had a glovebox light. Such an easy fix thanks to @depronman for the 3D printed switch actuator and @CreweAudi for supplying the new light. If anyone is going to work in the V68 flap and has a broken light in the glovebox, you might as well fix the latter at the same time.
