The Definitive Suspension Parts List

carlston many thanks again for all useful info.
next days i order bilstein b4(front rear)+ kyb springs(less expensive compared to bilstein b3).
also bought dust cover kit and meyle hd drop link.
next step refresh appearance: remove some scratch, decontamination paint whit clay bar,and lastly auto wax(collinite 476).
at work end i open a new thread.:)
A very good choice of last stage protection ?

I may have missed it when skin-reading the thread - Is there a decent way to look up what suspension springs my new A2 should have had when new?

It's another TDI90 SE without OSS - From the reading I've done I assume THESE B3s (37-147679) would make worthy replacements for the front but I'm not sure - Also what about the rear? THESE B3s (36-147717)?

Hi everyone, I had a read through the thread and couldn't see an answer to my question, but apologies if I've missed it -

Assuming the car is as described, I am about to pick up a new A2 (2005 90 TDI) in the next few days. From speaking to the seller, I'm pretty sure it needs to have the droplinks replaced. I remember going though a fair few droplinks on my old A2 and wondered if people recommend a particular brand to give decent life? I live in Scotland where most of the roads seem to be deteriorating into farm tracks so if I can get as much life out of them as possible, that would be handy.

I have used the meyle and hd (Polo) top mounts much tougher for rough track lanes If you live in the sticks as we do ..good luck .

Yes 100% agree with the above, has to be Meyle HD (Heavy Duty) drop links. Wouldn't use anything else and is the first job I would do when buying any A2. Around £30 for a pair off ebay ?

Any comment on my future setup for 90tdi with OSS??
- Koni Special Active shock (F+R)
- Spidan 49572 frontsprings
- Spidan 49546 rearsprings

Many A2 owners have had premature breakages of Spidan and Suplex springs. They used to be reliable, but not anymore.

Spidan 49572 is for a Daihatsu, not an A2.

Maybe try OEM part number 6Q0411105AC for the front springs and 8Z0511115AS for the rear springs. If you regularly carry 4 passengers then the heavy duty 8Z0511115BB is worth considering. However, if you don't normally carry rear passengers, the lighter duty 8Z0511115AS will give a less harsh ride.

I’ve just fitted Eibachs and whilst they are lowering springs, they lower the car to a sensible level, are great quality and are not crashy (in the limited driving I’ve done since fitting). Worth looking into.

Steve did you fit a full suspension kit or just springs, I have always liked the Eibachs and have used them in the past without any issues? I'm interested as I have it on my project thread to do and I would like a setup that doesnt hit the floor but gives a slightly better stance over the soon to be fitted 17" wheels.

Have done the full works, pretty much everything underneath has been renewed or refurbished.

After driving mine relatively hard Friday, i would suggest b8 is a good way to go. Running 195/50r15 on lightweight wheels, it's not crashy and the stance is really nice. The yokos even give some rim protection despite them being 7j. Also have h&r arbs front and rear.

Sorry not to jack this thread but my 1.4 petrol needs 2 front shock. Are sachs standard ones decent?
Thanks

I'm in a long conversation with my local garage about a broken rear spring on my TDi 90 with OSS. They're not available from Audi any more. According to KYB, their replacement is RH6594, with a free length of ~338 mm. I've looked at a number of other potential suppliers, including the frangible Spidan and Sachs, and they all quote a free length of 336 - 338 mm. My garage is saying that the unbroken spring on mine, which judging by the colour code is original, is ~295 mm long. They've ordered a replacement through TPS (I think) and that's come in at ~338 mm. If the ride height is going to be the same with the replacement, I presume the rate of the KYB is lower. Is that so? Anyone else have experience of replacing an OEM spring with one of these apparently over-long after-market jobs?
Yer man at KYB technical support says that all after-market springs are a compromise, trying to accommodate the whole range of the 21 OEM variants in one or two options. Looking at the catalogues, that appears to be the case.
I'm minded to replace both rears at the same time, but the garage is reluctant to fit these 338 mm versions since they don't appear to fit without a fight.

Thanks
Mike
PS, chapeau to Carlston for compiling this list.

What is the colour code of your rear springs?

It doesn't sound like you have 8Z0511115BB rear springs as these are much longer than 295mm in length.

Before fitting new rear springs, you might want to check which upper underlays you have, as there are two types 1J0512149B and 1J0512149 as shown below. 1J0512149 doesn't appear to be available new anymore. There's plenty of availability for 1J0512149B.

According to the garage, the originals are 2 orange 2 green 1 yellow dots, which makes them 8Z0511115AG. Even after nearly 17 years and 150 000 miles, I would be surprised if they would have taken a ~40 mm set.
The spring seats don't come in to the discussion, since the measurements were taken with the springs off the car, and I replaced them (the seats) 2 years ago.
