The Great Music and Hi-Fi thread.

Myself and a friend recorded this very talented young lady at the Nottingham Royal Concert Hall two years ago, the first time we had ever done a big project (albeit for a very small run of CDs), it was an amazing experience...

The Kanneh-Masons kids are musical prodigies, her brother Sheku played the cello at a rather lavish wedding recently.

Classic C414's used I presume? Pre 1990 preferably. And hopefully with the lid not fully up.

I was so awe struck by the venue and the artists that, embarrassingly, I don't remember the kit that we used, it was all moderate quality though, nothing special. We made our own Decca Tree which proved its worth and the close-mic setup on the piano also worked a treat too.

The one thing that did let-down the project was the radio mics, which were provided by NRCH.

I take it the reference to the lid refers to the piano rather than the microphones?
Do manufactures like Yamaha pre-wire or indeed install microphones in their concert grands?

Yes, it's always best to leave concert grand pianos with their lid half open - short stick.

Regardless of any pre-wiring, I'd always use my own (star-quad) and a pair of old 414s set to cardioid pattern placed either directly on the frame (with good banquet stands) or on mic boom stands. You can run cable around and out past the hinge and down the leg to keep it neat.

If using close mics (and there was no other instrumentation), you could have got away with a stereo crossed pair instead of a tree - the centre hole being filled with the close group. The tree/crossed pair will give you air and space, the close group will give you the intimate sound.

?

I saw her brother make that performance on tv and what a performance. Both enormously talented people.

Very Quincy Jones ?

Good shout, ? he mentored her as well as everyone else at the time. It's a favourite of mine being only 16 and having been out the the country for a few years, coming back to the UK and this Rushen track and many others of the time made such an impression that last to this day. Lots of happy memories.

Talking of quincy......It was on the bottom shelf in that picture of mine.

My set is a Marantz all in one and some DIY speaker kit from Vifa (Filligran, 2 way system), connected speaker wires are wire left overs from the aviation industry.
Still mis my DIY kit tube preamp and Denon monoblocks, but they didn't seem to be child proof enough so I let them go.......that set was connected with a "Van Den Hul" interconnects, but only because I got it for free (the former owner didn't liked the sound of the cable, nice bloke; he's my uncle...;))

Though, I had a studio builder around last summer and he thought the sound was "nice" from my current "set up" so can't complain I guess ?.
Music wise; From Bach to Beastie Boys and everything what grabs my attention.

I've just seen this...

I think I might just wing-it and go on Saturday for a shmooz, listen and learn perhaps. I quite like the idea of getting an old turntable & amp and I need to listen to some headphones to upgrade to... lest I forget to buy some records to add to my limited collection.

Yup it's still there, the one and only time I ever went was in '91 - took a mate with me who wasn't in the least bit interested, I tend not to take these things too seriously so we both had a laugh and heard some amazing music.

If you go to the show, be sure to check out PMC - I have never heard speakers like them and the bass extension they produce from such slender boxes is astounding.

Cans wise, I am biased but try some high end Grados (wood enclosures) and the Beyerdynamic Amiron (wired) or 1990/1770 (open/closed back respectively). Or, build your own - I've had some spectacular results for around the £3-400 mark.

I've heard PMC speakers before, as you say, the bass is full, warm and dynamic for such small enclosures.

As much as I'd love to make my own headphones I'm not entirely sure I'd have the patience to realise their full potential with the care and attention required to really make them sing.
Have you got a link to a website for more info please...?

I'd like to hear a good pair of electrostatic cans like Stax.

+1 for Grados, one of my colleagues is going to NYC next week so I've asked him to look up a set of PS500e for me, I'd save about £150-200 on UK prices
