An OpenSky is reborn!

I did consider living with my non functioning OSS just as a glass roof but now it has been reborn!!!!!!!

I picked mine up from Worthing this afternoon with a replaced OSS and blinds after contacting Chris Smith at Audi Worthing some weeks ago. Excellent service from Chris and all down there. Also had a service and Mot at the same time with full use of a A1 for the 3.5 days it was there.

If there is any way you can get your OSS back in working order then go for it. I know I was fortunately covered by the 10 yr warranty period but if there are any OSS owners out there undecided just try and get it sorted by any means.

Nigel:):):)

Thats great:) Chris Smith sounds like a top bloke. I guess Worthing Audi are going to get some votes on the ADI awards. From some very happy A2 owners.

Cheers

David

And today I received my written 2 year guarantee for the new OSS, parts and labour, from Chris Smith @ Worthing Audi. He also very kindly included a tube of G00045002 and said that Marley Silicone from B&Q is exactly the same. Off for a spin with the roof open !

Glad to hear your Open Sky is all good. Is the Marley's silicone for use on the seals or the actual mechanism?

Cheers Rob.

I have just been informed, by Chris Smith at Worthing Audi, that my Open Sky will be repaired as a good will gesture by Audi at no cost!!! i am soooo excited! I cannot wait to see it in action.

Big thank you to Nigel, and others on the forum who shared their experience and advice.

I contacted Chris, sent him details of my service history, chassis number and within 48 hours he got a response from Audi and now i am booked in for August 16th. It has put my departure to Helsinki back a week but definitely worth it.

BIG THANK YOU TO CHRIS SMITH AND WORTHING AUDI

I am sure chris would help you out. But would it not be easier to head over to Germany to see these guys? Save you the ferry ect.

Good luck

David

Hello everyone.
Just got back from a 2700 km trip to Germany, where i had my old OpenSky System replaced by a new one, backed by a two year warranty, yey! :D
This post should give you the necessary info in order to check if you are eligible for a free repair/replacement of your now defective panoramic roof.
I firstly want to thank bretti_kivi and nuttinnew for their support in arranging this trip and their willingness to help out a fellow club member.

Let me start with a few prerequisites: your car has to be no more than 10 years old from the date of first purchase (you don't necessarily have to be the first owner) and it's last FULL service has to have been done at an Audi garage. The second one is pretty easy to do but if your car is over 10 y.o., sorry...

As far as i know, the only service where Audi has this free repair deal ( that's "kulanz" in german ) is Rinner Autohaus in Bad Tolz, Germany. Their website is here: http://www.rinner-gruppe.de/cms/
They have a pretty capable garage that managed to change my whole roof in about 8 hours.
The whole thing was pretty simple to set up. I contacted Rinner's on the phone in order to see if i could benefit from the free repair. They speak English well enough. Then sent them an email with my VIN number and mileage and two days later got the go ahead from Audi Germany. I then called them again to arrange a reservation and that's about it. After i arrived in Bad Tolz, i left them the car at 8 am and by 4 pm it was done. This was a full roof swap with a brand new one. This was done because after some good months ago my roof refused to close on one side, now it degenerated and wouldn't open at all, just clanked when you tried to open it. The technician said that a repair was out of the picture.
The entire cost of the OSS replacement was covered by Audi.

Now for some note worthy advice on the whole operation:
-- if your car has or hasn't been last serviced in an Audi garage, it's a good advice to have the full service done at Rinner's. Oil+oil filter+air filter+polen filter+fuel filter+brake fluid service is about 490E, including also a good inside clean, outside wash, shock absorber and brake efficiency test, electric diagnostic, etc.
I've had the full two year service done at an Audi dealership in Romania just before leaving for Germany because it was way cheaper, with the Audi stamp and everything on the service booklet. When i arrived in Bad Tolz i was told by mr. Rinner that the oil change code my Audi garage used in the service chart was wrong and because of that i could not benefit from the free OSS repair ( even though i've sent him a scan of the service chart a week in advance to check if all was ok, so as not to go to Germany for nothing... ). This lead to me have a second oil change in 1200 kilometers done at Rinner's, for the sum of 291E, now sporting the correct code. Of course he could not tell me what the difference was between the two codes, but going back home with the roof broken was not an option for me considering the distance travelled, and i quote him: "changing your roof costs over 2000E, you can have it done now for 291E..."
To sum this up, don't complicate things, get the full service done at Rinner's and avoid any drama. :)
-- consider booking online a room in Bad Tolz for the time your car is in service. Having a rest while your OSS is repaired is not a bad idea. The town is a small one (and boring if you ask me, because i visited during a terrible snowy weather, but nuttinnew swears it's pretty nice :) ) and is also pretty far from any large towns or tourist attractions. Also, i arrived earlier than expected at 3 in the morning and the town was dead. Not a man or car on the streets, no place to get a coffee or even an open gas station. Only saw a taxi, and the driver said that just the casino was open, but i skipped on visiting it.

Any other questions i'll be glad to answer them.
Down with the ClosedSky System, long live OpenSKY!

Fixed!

Like several others, I was fortunate that my A2 fell within the parameters; picked mine up from Caffyn's on Monday after it had been repaired (actually replaced). Whilst it was there, I got them to do a full service, cambelt and waterpump and replace the brake fluid - managed to negotiate a very reasonable price for the additional work and cannot praise Chris and Mike enough. I too had an A1 as a courtesy car

Delighted to have her back with a working OSS

Thanks Caffyns!

Dan

for anyone wanting and able to have the OSS replaced (less than 10 years old and with FASH) i would contact Chris smith and the team at Worthing Audi (Caffryns).
I have had mine replaced by Worthing Audi, mine starting playing up after 20k miles, and have to say they really look after you.
I travelled the 250 miles, left my car for a week, picked up an A1 courtesy, travelled back and all done, UNDER WARRANTY/ AUDI GOODWILL.
Had it serviced at same time.
Chris told me i was the fourth A2 (was done in july) and there were more on the way.
If you are also in northern France, belgium, etc it must be worth a trip.
Many thanks again to Worthing Audi, GREAT SERVICE!
Glen

^^^ I'm a lot closer than you but can't get any time off of work, a courtesy car for a week would solve that.
I've made contact with Chris, sending him my info/service paperwork etc and we'll go from there.

I've been following this thread for a while, wondering if my my 'Broken Sky' would qualify for a repair. The local dealer in York said they'd never heard of any problems with OSS ever! But their warranty man looked into it, with the following response:

"My Warranty Advisor has head back From Audi Warranty Uk, unfortunatly this component is not
covered by a 10 year warranty. The only time this would be a free of charge repair would be if
the car in question was recently bought from an Audi Dealership and had an Audi Extended
Warranty applied. Or if the dealership had made a contribution towards the cost of the repair."

I did mention that Worthing Audi had carried out similar repairs, but I'm not sure if they followed this up.

Has anybody had anything in writing from Audi themselves confirming the offer? (Apologies if I couldn't find it in the thread, it's quite lengthy now)!

My A2 turns 10 at the end of October and recently had a major service with Audi, however it does have one non-Audi stamp in the book which I guess could be a show stopper. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Hi JRo,

I would contact Chris Smith at Worthing Audi; he appears to have built up a lot of respect with the Warranty team at Audi as indicated by the number of A2OC members heading south for an OSS replacement.

I just dropped mine off today (turns 10 years next month!) Zipping back to Kent in a new A1 was fun.

I've just contacted Doncaster Audi about my OSS not working correctly, they said they would need to have a look at it first, they want £57 to do this then they would inform me of any action required after this. My A2 is less than 10 years old but does not have FASH, don't know if it's worth contacting Worthing Audi and use the £57 towards the fuel costs to drive down there :-/

@JRO, I would get in touch with Worthing Audi asap - you can't afford to wait past October to miss the 10-year window. I doubt that one non-main dealer service would be a show-stopper.

My OSS broke last week while on holiday. The passenger side runner still seems to want to work, but the driver side runner doesn't, ending up with the roof getting skewed when opening, then the motor makes an awful creaking noise and then stops. It has closed ok with the manual crank handle though. I suspect that the roof panel cable on the driver side runner has become detached or something. Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it?
I may give Chris Smith a call to see if this is repairable. I have FASH and the car is <10 years old.

You should definitely give Chris a call, this is exactly the sort of fault that can be rectified. Go for it.
