Today I.....

Just a standard stage 1 map. 105bhp, 235nm. Much smoother and pulls much harder at lower revs and through the mid range. There's very noticeably a lot more mid range torque - I can no longer drive everywhere with my foot flat on the floor!

Same as mine at 105bhp and 245Nm...the improvement in drivability is the biggest bonus to me...although not sure it does much for my economy on my 15mile ‘commute’ to work...

Today I ordered what I hope to be the last bits for my ‘Summer’ A2.

Last job: front brake back plates

Jobs completed whilst she’s been off the road:

Newer front calipers that work and are not corroded at all.

New front flex brake lines.

Brakewear wiring fitted ,(was missing)

New crankcase breather, (oil leak solved).

Brake fluid change.

Main brake pipes to ABS unit removed cleaned painted and refitted, (awful job, much knuckle skin lost, will consider removing engine next time for access).

Newer rear shocks fitted after cleaning up and painting. (No more leaky bouncyness)

Rear springs removed stripped, painted red to match the leather interior and refitted with new rubber and sponge mounts.

New rear brake shoes, all parts removed and cleaned before refitting. New wheel cylinders fitted due to snappage.

Rear drums painted in grey heatproof exhaust paint to match car.

New exhaust fitted which has a catalyst. (No more EML).

New door strap on drivers door, (final annoying clunk noise gone).

Rear axle sanded and undersealed whilst access was good.

New rear brake lines from connector in front or rear axle to wheels, New flex hoses. (Everything snapped as soon as I went near it with a spanner.)

Nothing particularly expensive but all incredibly satisfying.

Can’t wait for March. Then the other one comes off the road and off we go again.

I had the traction control kicking in on a couple of damp hills for the first time!

Hi Snydersmuncher93,
Sounds almost identical to my list I’ve picked up from TPS today, interested in your oil leak was the hose split ?
Keith.

Changed the rack end on mine which is the only thing it failed the MOT on. My first A2 so every job is a learning opportunity. Will book the retest for next week and progress with oil change, air filter, stereo replacement (like for like) and then hopefully my new CCCU arrives to fix the main fault of the battery drain and no key pairing. Will "do the accounts" soon too

No, it was the plastic breather unit itself with a hairline crack in the plastic. The lower one of the three bolt holes had been overtightened at some point.

It is possible to remove the thing from underneath though. Just get the car nice and high up on axle stands.

Tony.

Hi again Keith. The one I got was very reasonable, fitted and I’ll find the receipt so you can see where it was from.

This was the fsi with the turbo on it ?
What went wrong with the engine and was it related to the extra load introduced by the turbo or possible the mixture not be correct (likely lean) when under boost

What a shame as it looked a nice A2 and something a little different

Hi all, quick question.
Is it safe to leave the car in reverse for long time? Is it bad for the transmission as the reverse has "push down" spring mechanism? Where I work the car park is a bit downhill, when it's cold the rear breaks can get stuck a bit, so leave it in gear is better. Cheers

If you leave the gearbox in reverse whilst you're at work and your car is parked facing down hill, you'll only be doing what, I suspect, millions of drivers around the world do. It's the Highway Code's recommendation: reverse when pointing down hill, first when facing up hill. However, I wouldn't want to not apply the handbrake. Perhaps the system would benefit from an overhaul.

I always leave my cars in gear. But usually go for the higher forward gears. I have an idea it would be more difficult for the engine to turn.
