Today I.....

Have a quandary.
My project car (2022 WOM-rebuilt engine with oil chain job, 40-odd thousand mile NTG gearbox) developed a sudden vibration on Friday teatime accelerating onto the local dual carriageway on the way home (I should stress not hammering it either!). 2nd gear from 2000rpm onwards and 3rd. Seems to go away at higher 3000s revs ~ above 45mph. Unrelated to engine speed. Had two new J&R driveshafts fitted in February after the driver side original exhibited spontaneous unscheduled disassembly of the CV joint rubber driving back to Scotland after New Year and the other was pretty worn looking. The gearbox is really smooth and the engine (with clutch out) revs all the way up to the redline without any obvious vibration other than the fact it is running. The wheel bolts are all secure.

In an ideal world it'll be something like a balance weight lost from a wheel - so the obvious first check would be to swap a pair of winter wheels onto the front to see if the vibration goes away. Apart from that and observing anything obviously loose while I have a wheel off - are there any other thoughts? I have a morbid fear of it being something like the differential or otherwise internal to the gearbox ; a driveshaft would be easy enough to resolve but they are new.
Hi Robin,
Did you fit the driveshafts your self or did WOM fit?
Have you any photos of what was fitted?
I’m not doubting their work but curious as to what was fitted as I had a similar problem which was
a fractured weld on the shaft, on a 1.9 tdi (PDengined) Galaxy I’ll dig out the photo

IMG_0634.jpegIMG_0633.jpegThe first picture was their welded flange & the second their replacement machined variant

Hope that is some help where to check.

the driveshafts were fitted by my local mechanic who has fitted the same for me on my other car (PTW that he fitted, also J&R and completely fine for over 2 years of hard use now) .. I should have done it when the gearbox was being fitted but it was only at Christmas when I ended up doing a country length drive in the project that the original driveshafts decided enough was enough. Don't have a photo of them but will have a good look. Going to try swapping wheels first.

On the galaxy it was the short gearbox shaft that the welds fractured on it came with the kit
So should be possible to drop the driveshaft to check if needed

Today, after over 4 years of ownership, I'd discovered the rear seats can have 2 tilting positions
This could be useful when need a bit more boot space, while also having passengers in the car.
