Just for clarification: it was assumed that this MYP gearbox was going to be installed in a car with the MK20 ABS unit, hence the work on the gearbox was done. However, the car actually had an MK60 ABS unit, hence why the installation of the speedo drive turned out to be unnecessary.

Thank you for pointing this out, it’s pretty much what I had assumed from George’s explanation, only mentioned it as it’ll be something that I pick up with him over PM. Such a big mistake which could have been a verified by inspecting a previous VCDS scan report. You know what they say about assumption!

That’s right, the assumption was that as it was a 51 plate that it would be an early ABS but it was probably around the time that they changed. Vince said it took minimal time to swop the the speedo drive so it was no big deal. If anyone goes this way with an early box the most economical way is to send an old style box and the MYP or whatever and he’ll fit that in between other jobs, then the car is on the (expensive) ramp for the least time.

Hi Tom, I’m going from memory but there was also a clutch replacement. I think that is roughly what the gearbox work cost on its own. Whatever it was it was certainly worth it!

Hello all,

With gearbox decisions put to one side whilst I consider the best way forward I’m going to remain focussed on the interior and creature comforts.

Only last night I collected a pair of rear door cards that sport the leatherette armrests I was searching for. Thank you very much Parmjit @slumdog. These will be worked on this coming week and fitted next weekend once the products have cured.

I’ve spent a few hours in the garage today getting the necessary connectors and looms ready for the next wave of instalments.

I’ll be adding these throughout the evenings which will hopefully see full functionality of the rare SE heated electric lumbar leather seats by next weekend.

Also up my sleeve is another auto dimming mirror with compass, this will be another welcomed item whilst commuting in darkness with other drivers who have either badly adjusted headlamps or annoying flickering LED headlamp bulbs.

A little niggle which has also been noticed over the last 1200 miles is that the cruise control stalk is of the earlier design, works perfectly but I do prefer the later type. Additionally on the wiper stalk the intermittent wiper setting only sweeps the screen at the slowest setting. The faster setting produces the same speed as the switch all the way to the left. Fortunately this terrific A2 was supplied with a spare set of stalks which I’ll swap over soonest.

If I get home early enough I’ll be adding the bespoke A2 courtesy lights to the base of the door cards, cannot wait to see how these look!

I’ll add pictures to show progress over the evenings whilst I’ve got the tools out.

Was the wiper speed on intermittent configurable Tom? I always thought it was the same as the slower of the two constant speeds. If it's slow, the motor earth would be the first place I'd look. I had a slow wipe on the Storm which a better earth cured.

I may not have explained it that well, the motor sweeps perfectly. The wiper stalk, when on the intermittent setting sweeps only at the longest delay as if the switch was all the way to the left. If I move the switch to the right for less of a delay it remains at the same long delay, hope that makes sense. I'm confident the switch is at fault here as any movement to the right to lessen the delay should in fact cause the wipers to sweep the screen, it unfortunately does not:

I have a spare stalk with DIS switches which I'll put in its place then take it apart. It'll be a dirty contact or something simple like that I'm sure.

Try contact cleaner sprayed into the built up stalk to see if it clears the issue. Second port of call is the wiring plug for the wipers. This is in a bad place and gets wet easily. The water traps inside and the first contact that corrodes is the earth contact. The other contacts are for the powers for the wiper so they also need to be clean. Again contact cleaner and cotton buds to clean and remove corrosion and a smear of dielectric grease around the periphery of the plug as it slots into the socket and a thin coating on the outside where the wires enter will keep the water out.

To save further research, can you confirm this A2 has the Mk60 or Mk20 ABS unit or can you remember if the MZN gearbox has the speed drive output.


This is very kind of you. Trowbridge is a location I certainly intend to visit in the coming months. It’s where PDK was located before it came into my possession, plus work can see me passing that way from time to time.

I’ll certainly be in touch when such an opportunity presents itself.

Just found this one that looks reasonable in terms of mileage (also bearing in mind the 1.2 Bluemotion it came from won't exactly be putting a huge strain on it with it's mighty torque figures in a Polo!) - just needs a damn good clean by the look of it.

There's a 10% off voucher applicable to it on eBay. Also it looks like they'll accept offers so you should get it for well under the £150 you'd budgeted if you went for it....

Afternoon all,

Some of you will have noticed that interior colour scheme amendment that I also added one of the beautifully engineered Bespoke A2 Footrests:

These footrests sit quite nicely next to the TT pedal covers which this particular A2 has been lacking.

A quick eBay purchase of a used set subsequently occurred:

The description stated they were of course used and had some wear to them. But from the pictures I couldn’t see anything significant as they simply looked spot on, certainly for the price as well.

When they arrived they actually looked brand new (less for an insurmountable bit of rubber missing from one the the slots) so checked to ensure they were actually factory items, indeed they are:

Really chuffed with the condition, price and knew they would look superb next to the footrest.

So here they are fitted:

Please excuse the untidy footwell, it’s had my feet down there for this weeks 600 mile commute as seen on the factory pedal covers.

A much haplier footwell to my eyes which will look even better after a detailing.

Should have some capacity over the weekend for some other little updates to the cabin.

Interestingly, the new OE (I was lead to believe) clutch pedal cover in Audrey has already had the rubber inserts on its left side worn down to the point where my wet shoe has slipped off the clutch once or twice. I guess I was done as this wouldn’t happen with a genuine one I don’t think.

I’ve run these TT pedals for quite some years now and not endured any noticeable wear to date. The factory set in OEM were brand new before fitting into it’s predecessor, at a guess they’ve probably seen my little size 7s for in excess of 100’000 miles.

This is no doubt down to my choice of footwear I guess. The soles of my shoes that I commute in could be considered quite soft compared to that of a pair of brogues for instance.

A factory set should have the part numbers as you might be able to make out in the picture above); 8N0 for the brake and clutch along with 8N2 for the accelerator.

Afternoon all,

A minor niggle I noticed with this glorious A2 since acquisition was the drivers side headlamp being dull due to what looks to be failing lacquering. I’m positive it would polish up perfectly which I may well do in the coming months which would be of benefit to someone else.

Here’s what the headlamps looked like last night after wiping each morning, note the car hadn’t been cleaned since last weekend so also has some 600 miles of grime stuck to the front of it:

Wiping down the headlamps again reveals the dull drivers side:

Totally useable and much better than I’ve seen in the past but have a beautifully clear set of headlamps in the garage. Only last night did I get them out from the shed to fit:

Much clearer although there is some moisture on the inside, which is due to the shed being a little damp and I left the rear covers off during storage, lesson learned there I think. I know this moisture will clear after Mondays commute as the seals are perfect and have been saving these for a special A2 to fit them to. If I find any silica gell packets from the multiple parcels that arrive here then I’ll pop them in the headlamps to assist but certain all will be fine soon enough.

I believe it was @A2Steve who recently told me he drills a few unobtrusive holes in the headlamps at their lowest point to allow for drainage / airflow to keep the headlamps free of condensation.
